Pedersoli's Lubriblack, what's it good for?

I was actually looking to try Bore Butter, but the local BP importers said he didn't stock it, but had something the same.

It was pretty cold and windy at the range the other day and it was still very runny. I used it to cover the cylinder mouths on one cylinder full and it was everywhere. It is like toothpaste consistency blue ink.

As the country boys say around here, "what's the good of it?"

I rigged up a double boiler and made up a batch of 50/50 Beeswax and Olive Oil. That looks pretty good.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

A search on the Darksider's Den should give you more recipies for lube than you can shake a stick at.
I use a mix of bee's wax, Crisco (vegetable shortening), and Canola oil for bullet lube on my cast bullets.  I forget the exact mix, but it is close to a 1 to 1 ratio of weight on the wax and crisco, and then a 1% or so of oil.

I have used the Crisco straight to seal chambers on my cap and ball revolvers.  I've not messed with it in the Texas heat, but it did provide plenty of seal and lube for my Remington copies.

Howdy 4fingers,

Sounds like you are shootin' C&B pistols.  With the EPP series of bullets the lube goes in the lube grove and is captive.  No over ball smear is needed.  These bullets are lube/sized much like cartridge bullets and taken to the match in 5 round vials.  To load, simply pour in powder and seat the lube/sized bullets.  At the loading bench, cap the cylinders ON THE GUN and you're good to go.

Yepper.  Tried the EPP UG - 36 in my Snubbies and well liked em.  If shooting BP, so much easier and un-messy with the lube in the
lube groove.  And ..... they carry a ton of lube!!  Accurate too.

Additionally, I was tempted to also try the EPP UG - 45.  Darn'd if I didn't get the same result.  Absolutely outstanding.  Plus, when
using APP (most of the time) I shoot them "as cast" with no lube.  Work a treat.  I do suggest a very light chamfer on the camber mouth
to aid starting them square.  I do use a cylinder loading stand (Tower of Power) and load off the guns.

Good advice. I only use bore butter as a grease on my BP revolvers, cylinder pins and internals. I also put the product into a tin (steel) and let it age a bit before using. The containers are not 100% airtight, which allows excess moisture/solvent in BB to evaporate. Thickens up nice for a BP compatible grease.

The 50/50 home lubes can also be "whipped" up a bit and transferred to convenient squeeze bottles for use as over-the top lube. I find this very easy to apply without making a mess. Non-period containers can be disguised with a cloth or leather pouch if desired.

To get some use out of the "Lubriblack", you might try letting it "air out" a bit and give it a go in another manner.

I'm shooting Ruger Old Armys (well, I'm shooting one right now, one completely locked up with it's mystery ailment that struch as I pulled the new gun out of the box and also seems to strike every time I try and go anywhere else to shoot).

I bought a Big Lube ROA mould, tower of power and lotza plastic 5 round boolit holders a year or so ago, but haven't got around t casting any yet as I'm working my way through two bags of 500 round balls I was gifted (boy, I would have been in slngshot rascal heaven if I had those as a kid).

I did mix up a batch of 50/50 beeswax and olive oil last week in a double boiler and filled an old shaving soap tin and an old pie dish of Mum's with it (and promptly left it at home on the weekend, D'Oh!). It looks good though, a little bit stiff, but it is reasonably cold here at the moment. If it is too stiff to use, I will cook up a softer batch and put a Crayola in it as a winter lube.

I have another shaving soap tin coming up so maybe I'll decant some of the Lubriblack into it and see if it improves. It has been a very expensive fizzer at this stage. After seeing how cheap and easy it is to make lube at home, I won't be paying big dollars for it in future, but as always I left things to the last minute and paid through the nose.
