Very nice rifle.  ;)

Nice wood, too.  I've handled a fair number of Cimarron's version of that one (Brushpopper) and they do balance very nicely!

BTW, your second photo is AWOL.

thank y'all for the kind words. the gun dose balance like a dream. i was surprised by the short length of pull, but it feels good. i guess it's because it is there short carbine version.

Calling it a short carbine is a misnomer, as it is not a carbine at all, regardless of barrel length.  Taylors calls it a Sporting Rifle, Half Octagonal Barrel.  And the length of pull (the buttstock) is the same as any '73 rifle.  But if it feels good, that's all that matters!

i guess it comes down to ones prospective. some say a carbine has to have a 16ln barrel and others say if it is short enough to use handily from horseback. some company's call a 20in barrel a carbine, i have a few 600/660 rem. with 20in barrels and rem. calls them a carbine. but like you said as long as it feels good ;D ;D

Carbine butt stock and saddle ring usually indicate a carbine. Does anyone offer a 20'' round barrel? Winchester maybe?

Abilene

Generally, a carbine has the carbine buttstock, a round barrel, a forend with a band around it, and a barrel band around the magazine end and barrel.  Some have saddle rings.  Standard original '73's were 20" but could be ordered however.  Current Uberti repros are 16" and 19".

A rifle has the crescent buttplate, and might have a pistol grip.  The forend has a cap on the end.  The barrels are octagonal or half-oct. and the magazine attaches to it by a hanger.  Front sights are dovetailed.  Original standard was 24" and many were round, but again anything could be ordered.  Ubertis are 18", 20", 24", 30"

There are certainly exceptions.  I've seen several pics of old '66 carbines that had the rifle buttstock.

Wouldn't the proper designation for this be a short rifle with half round, half octagon barrel? That's how the collectors I've known refer to such '73s.

Good Troy

This reminds me of a joke I once heard....I think it came from an "I Love Lucy" episode.
This woman is at an art gallery.  The artist is present while she is admiring some of his work.
She comments "That certainly is a pretty boat!"...The artist says, "It is a ship!".  The lady's responds
"Oh...no matter, it is a beautiful picture!"...The artist continues..."Hhh-emmm....It is a painting, m'am!"
She offers "I'll give you $100 for it"...the artist says "My good lady, you have just bought yourself a picture of a boat!"

Olskool...Looks like you bought a carbine, if that is what you want to call it!

whatever it is  i like it! i had one a few years ago in 45LC that had a 24in barrel, do doubt it was a rifle. but i like short guns so i cut it to 18in it looked like a factory job, then one day i lost my mind and sold it, i have wanted another one ever sense. so when i got this one i went with the 44wcf tomorrow my mold from biglube will be here! then it will be black powder time....

I have a Uberti copy rifle that is in 44 WCF, and shoot BP with it.  Lots of fun, but I certainly would like a carbine configuration.  My rifle has no checkering, so it is a challenge to grip the fore end and push back on my shoulder to hold the rifle steady when levering.  I wrapped a piece of leather just ahead of the rear sight, and that gives me the traction I need.  The barrel ban is a convenient place to grip and push the rifle back on to my shoulder....I see a 1866 carbine in my future (looks good with my cap and ball revolvers).
Go make some smoke!
