I have read in the past of frame cracks in 45 LC caliber open tops . Would going to modest loads in 45 Schofield help
With this potential problem or just go to a 44 or 38 caliber? The only open tops I have experience with are percussion
Cap fired.

The issue was addressed some years ago...it hasn't been reported in gun with date Code 2013 and above.

Course yeah , I'd if your buy new  2014-6  , I believe Bob's your Uncle..

It wasn't the frames that cracked, it was the barrel at the bottom rear, where it is clearanced for the cylinder gas ring.  Some .44's did this as well.  Hasn't been a problem for a few years.  But the cylinder walls on the .45 are very thin, especially at the bolt notches so shooting mild loads is definitely recommended regardless of cartridge case (45 Colt, 45 Shofield, 45 Cowboy Special)

Thanks Major--I will note these date codes so I can be sure of not having a problem. All my uncles have crossed the Great Divide--
Probably sitting around a campfire and sipping bourbon whiskey and telling stories ( some may actually be true). Great bunch of guys.

Abilene's correct it was " it was the barrel at the bottom rear , where it is clearanced for the cylinder gas ring  "

I sorta glaze over your "frame cracks" reference , sorry  :P

I have and shoot 44's ....  no issues  :)

God Bless the Uncles in our lives.... mine too, have gone over the river and rest among the trees.
