Just for fun, in keeping with the no filler, deep seated  bullet theme, I decided to try deep seating some 250 gr D.D. Big Lubes over a reduced charge of b.p.

My goal was to determine how much b.p. would be required for .10" compression and a finished cartridge length of 1.34" (1/16" beyond the mouth of the case). As it turned out, 23 grs was the charge weight. Interestingly, that is the same charge weight of powder used in the early .44 Russian cartridge.

Using 23 grs. of KIK FFFG, average velocity was 737 f.p.s. (7 1/2" barrel).  Accuracy for the 5 rounds fired was very good. The mouth of the cartridges (Starline brass, FLS, not annealed) was left as expanded to help eliminate blow by.

Bullets were .454" diameter and 12 BHN. No bullet creep was experienced.

Fun, Fun, Fun! ;D

Good report w44wcf.

I'm thinkn that the DD-ROA Flat might work well with this treatment.  It has a flat, reasonably long nose and weighs in at 210 grains.  I shoot this bullet now and then from 45 Colt brass pushed along with 36 grains of FFFg Schuetzn.  It does snort and smoke merrily.  As a reduced load it may work quite well because I've also shot it out of C45Spl brass with 20 grains of powder and find it very friendly to my 1860 open tops with Kirst Konverter cylinders.  23 grains of FFFg under it in 45 Colt brass should still have the tip of the nose stickn' out and be SASS legal.

I'll load some up just to see how they perform.  Lacking a place that advertises C45Spl brass for sale, using 45 Colt brass does make sense.  You could have a winner here John.

It also should be noted here that the basic .44 Russian cartridge also used a .246 gr. rnb.
This makes this round perhaps even more .44 S&W like than a .45 Colt. within a revolver.

DDD,

Give ACA (AMERICAN COWBOY AMMO) a call.  They are NOW selling C45S cases for loading/re-loading.
Just for grins, when the snow finally melts, I'm going to try the EPP UG-45 on top of my Cap Gun load as a practice round.  Should be
real fun.

DD,
Thank you for the kind words. "23 grains of FFFg under it in 45 Colt brass should still have the tip of the nose stickn' out and be SASS legal."  Sounds like a plan. ;D

I did find that a 200 gr bullet that is .60" long required 26 grs of KIK FFFG to achieve .10" compression and an OAL of 1.34".
Velocity averaged 873 f.p.s. (7 1/2").  Interestingly, that loading is the equal to the vintage, venerable  .44 Henry.
