Ho the wire,

My Brother, "Deep Six" wants to use his Winchester 94 in 30-30 for 'long distance' cowboy shooting.  He'd like to load Holy Black and I'm trying to find out what components work best for this application.  I know that Winchester brought out the .32 Special for those that wanted to load black powder and it has a slower twist rate to avoid fouling questions encountered with the 30-30 and bp.

So, if any of you know a recipe that'll work for 30-30 and Genuine Powder, please share here.

It doesn't really work to well, with the fast twist and small bore size fouling becomes a nasty problem. Velocity isn't anything spectacular.
But having said all that , if I were going to try it again, I'ld load the cases with 40 grs. of Eynsford 2f, and seat a lubed felt wad for the .31 cal capnball guns , between the powder and bullet.

Thanks Ranch,

Exactly what you said about the fouling.  I'll pass this along to my brother about the lube wads.  I have some Swiss FFFg that may do his work.  My OE is all 1.5 Fg.

I appreciate the info.

Blackhorn 209 might give some decent results, but that's a different question all together.
Your OE 1.5 might work as well as the 2f, just compress it a bit more.

Ah, guys, can't use Blackthorn for anything in CAS.

DD,
Several summers ago,  I did some testing with b.p. in the .30-30 using 2 different rifles, a Marlin 336 A micro groove (24") and a Winchester '94 (26").  Long story short, as expected, Swiss worked the best with no foul out in the barrel for 20 rounds (most fired at one time.)

>Bullets: 150 gr. Lyman Loverin, 160 gr. LBT, 311291
All were gas checked and lubed with SPG

>Alloy: w.w+2% tin, 50-50 (Lino-WW)  The harder 50-50 alloy shot the best.
>Powders: Swiss FFG / Swiss FFFG
>Compression: .05" - .20 settled charge  .05" worked the best
>Primer: standard large pistol

After all the testing, the best combination produced groups in both rifles that averaged 2X the size of standard loads in both rifles which I did not think was too bad.  The furthest distance tried was on the 300 meter steel Javelina. Once sighted in, hits were pretty consistent from a solid rest. Group size was about 3 MOA.

The 160 LBT produced the best results. Velocity with Swiss FFFG ran a bit over 1,500 f.p.s.  with the Loverin a close second.
The heavier 311291 (175 grs.) did not shoot as well possibly because of lower velocity of around 1,400 f.p.s.  Heavier bullets produced partial keyholes.

Thanks John,

I'll tune my Bro into this thread and he can take it from there.  I'm encouraged that he is finally getting his guns ready for some CAS shooting.
