Hi guys
You folks were such a big help with my ASM pistol questions I thought I would run this one by you as well.
I have a steel frame, Lyman 1851 colt navy in .36. It is a great gun and I love shooting it.
I was wondering if there is a drop in conversion cylinder made for these .
I know it was made in the 70s by Armi San Paolo.
I really don't want to alter the pistol
Which more modern replicas are the closest in fit?
Can I use the on for Ubertis, or Pietas, or is there one made for it I just haven't found yet?
Thanks
Jim

You only have 2 choices.  Taylor's carries an R&D type cylinder for '51 Navy Frames.  There is a specific cylinder for Uberti and a specific cylinder for Pietta.  Which one might be a close fit for your gun is a toss-up.  You pays yer money and takes yer chances.  If however,
you don't tear it up trying to fit it, if one doesn't fit, Taylor's might exchange it for the other one.  OR:

Send the gun to Taylor's and see if they can fit one or the other.

Thanks Coffinmaker. That helps. I will look up Taylors.
I may see if they can do a full conversion.

Cardcutter,

Gonna disappoint.  In the past, Taylor's has offered a fitting service for their R&D type cylinders.  That I know of, they (Taylor's) does not
offer a "full conversion" service.

My suggestion is the same as Major 2.  Hoof Hearted (Gary Berghoff) does exemplary conversions.  If a fully converted gun is your heart's desire, give him call.

Berghoff was Walter "Radar" O'Riley on M.A.S.H  ;)  and mean Drum Player as well .

here is one he did for me... it is a Pietta London Model,  has 3" barrel also

Well ........ At least I got Gary's first name right.  That's 50/50 right??  Heck, at my age, half right is exemplary!!

Cardctter,

Armi San Paolo became Eruroarms in the early to mid 1970's.
I worked as the gunsmith for Euroarms of America the mid '70's until the mid '80's.
During that time period I found many of the Euroarms and Uberti internal revolver parts were interchangeable (for the most part).
Never tried to swap out revolver cylinders.

Ken Howell of R&D made convertible cylinders for ASP/Euroarms, Armi San Marko, Uberti and Pietas. These were the four primary Italian manufactures during this time period.
Each of these makers had slightly different geometries between the cylinder ratchet and the cylinder locking lug.
With Euroarms and ASM no longer being in operation... the convertible CF cylinders may not be available?
However, The Winchester Sutler does still have a supply of Euroarms revolver parts that might be modified to fit the Uberti cylinder?
I hope this info may help you?
My best,
Blair

Reverend P. Babcock Chase

howdy Cardcutter,

Hoofhearted is your best bet. He got an ASM Schofield of mine working perfectly when no one else could. He also fitted a conversion cylinder to my 3rd model dragoon and it is equally slick.

He's the man.

If you can't find a drop in cylinder you should consider the cost of custom work.  If yiou have a 40 year old Armi San Paolo, a company that has been out of business for decades, that is woth maybe $150.00 unless you just plain love the gun it would be cheaper to just buy a current production Uberti or Pietta and buy a cylinder that fits.  AND, it would be cheaper still to just buy a factory made conversion that is also made from better steel.

Blair

Pettifogger,

Armi San Paolo is (was) the production shop for Euroarms. Which closed its doors only a few years ago.
Parts and pieces for these are still available.
Armi San Paolo/Euroarms maintained a very close QC on all there parts and pieces over the years for Euroarms made goods.
Just a suggestion on my part. And is based off of my experience working as the gunsmith for Euroarms for almost 10 years
