I just purchased a Model 1860 Spencer Carbine .52 caliber with serial number 31433.   Anyone have any possible information on the history of this particular carbine?

Thanks in Virginia

Hello VASpencer,

Looks like your Spencer Carbine serial # 31433, was issued to Company G, 6th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry on July 13, 1864.  Another Spencer Carbine with the serial # 31434 was issued to the same unit.

Best I can do.

I see that you are located in VA. I work in Springfield Northern VA and have one of those awesome original carbines too. Does yours have a Stabler Cutoff? Does it have any Cartouches on the left side of the Buttstock. How is the rifling? Pitted or shootable? 3 grooves or original 6? Has it been modified to shoot centerfire ammo yet or is it still original. If you send a picture to the moderator, he will post them. Some of us are just plain curious. I am developing a spreadsheet with all known Spencer serial numbers from all sources, especially the internet and trade shows.

Mine is  all original, not modified (don't think I'll do that).  No Stabler cutoff, original 6 groove rifling.  There is a faint cartouche present though I can't make out the initials. Nice strong lands and grooves on the rifling with a small amount of faint pitting.
