I'm considering purchasing a Spencer.  I was thinking in 44-40 since I already have firearms in this caliber.  But, I've located a couple of for sale at "reasonable" prices.  I'm not sure about the calibers for use with BP.
Anyone have experience with the Spencer in 44 Russian in this rifle and/or 45 Colt using black powder?
I'm concerned about fouling of the action.  Thanks in advance!

Good Troy,

Until one of the SSS members owning one of the calibers you mentioned responds to your post, why not check out the SORI Thread, as many of the indicated threads with posts discuss different powders used in the Taylor Spencers . . . may answer your question.

That thread may be of help to you, the SORI Thread . . . I can't respond to your questions, as I only have original Spencers, but what others use in their 56-50 Taylor Spencers should also apply for the calibers you mentioned.

Also try a Search on the SSS home page - found this link that may be of help to you:

from what I know, the .44 Russian spencers didn't work out well. I picked up one in .44 Russian that someong had blowned the bottom out of the chamber. A 56-50 barrel will fit the .44 receiver with no other work.( yes, my parts gun is now in 56-50. I just haven't got the mag. to work right.) but I'm still working on that. there are almost no parts for the .44 Russian spencers(I got a few from Taylors).

Hey Pat!  I've decided not to get a 44 Russian after you and I visited. I've still not purchased a Spencer.  Still saving and shopping!

Hi Good Troy, I've talked to Taylors several times and they have a few mis. parts for the .44 Russian spencer. but no barrels and the co. in Italy ain't going to make any more. but I am now successful in getting my .44 spencer turned into a 56-50 spencer. one of the tricks is to cut the outside of the cases rim at a .45 degree angle. and lube every thing. I"ve had a .45 schofield and it's nothing to talke about but the one to have is a 56-50, save your money and go big. Yes, the brass is expensive, but you  get a lot of bang for your buck. and the 56-50's are accurate. I never shot one much more than about 75 yards. but I had a pretty good group going. I used trail boss. I have a friends 56-50, it's an original 1865. I load his gun with Black powder. the only problem with that after your 7 shots the barrel is so foulded it not accruate any more.  if you any where around Houston tx. we can go shoot both guns (ok, maybe a few others to play with also, I like cowboy guns.)

both 45 cases (L.C. and Schofield) are thicker than is the 44/40- they don't expand as well, and one gets more fouling.  I can't speak highly enough of the 56/50 regarding the fouling issue.

I can see how the expansion on the 56/50 will help with fouling of the action, but not of the barrel...Either way, I've made a decision to save up and get a 56/50 or 44/40

get the 56-50, some friends and I shot mine Friday and the wife of my friend said the 56-50 kicked less than my 7.62x39 upper on m,y  AR-15.  if you have problems with fining bullets for it, let me know, I poured up 130 for my self Thursday and the mold is working fine.(it's an accurate mold) they are a little expensive but "boy" do they work good. I've got a good load for the caliber if you reload(I hope you do) the ammo is expensive if you have to buy it.
