Forty Rod,

What is the time period you wish to represent? Also, do you have an occupation and/or location in mind for this imperession?
My best,
Blair

1885, Arizona, store keeper / merchant, socially prominent, fairly well-to-do.

Had final fitting on a vest today, the best I ever owned.  Comes with  silk string necktie, but I'll probably look for a puff or teck tie for evening wear.

Looking for shoes and trousers next.

Have frock coat variation coming, not as long as some, but just below the hips.  Longer than a sack coat.  Late Victorian type.

I'd suggest Missouri Boot & Shoe for a lace Balmoral
or Fagawee for the Congress ...
the Robert Land camp shoe might serve as well

You might want peruse The Gentleman's Emporium , several choices including English Oxfords

all of the above choices are in the  $120 range , good quality ....   I've had excellent wear from both my Congress & Camps  and both are comfortable footwear.

Those shorter frocks are sometimes called a Town Coat, same cut at the longer frocks, but more suited to the later period.

Dang, we gonna need pictures when you are done.

The time has passed so quick, the years all run together now.

Forty Rod,

Your time period, location, and occupation all fit well into the last quarter of the 19th Century. (as I had suggested in an earlier posting)

All of the footwear pictured would be available for your impression, quite affordable and durable in your area of the US by 1885
Find the style you like most within those that have been offered.
I would suggest you stay away from the "Camp Shoe" or "Baseball Shoe". These would be difficult to keep clean and good looking for a person of your chosen social status. The choice however is strictly up to you.
My best,
Blair

Here are a pair of original Congress, from the collection of Robert Land
Pairs are also on display at Arabia Steamboat Museum which sank  September 5, 1856.

Howdy,
I have a question for Delmonico.  What model of Roper boots were you wearing?

Major, thanks for posting that photo of footwear from the Arabia. I had forgotten about that incredible time capsule.
