I would like to work on the safety, from auto to manual. Advice?

Real simple.  Remove the stock and work the safety to see how it operates.  Simply shorten the rod that pushes the safety to the "On" position when you open it.  Done everyday for CAS guns and the safety will still work manually.

link shows excellent pix of stoger safety. all you have to do is shorten it enough to not engage. I didn't even have to remove it used a small keyhole saw and did it in place. metal in that part is really soft.

As long as you have it apart, Brownells sells a lighter spring to reduce the effort needed to push the lever over.
