Hello SSS,

I am almost 59 years old, and my eyes were once better . . . are there any tricks and ideas for clear view of front and rear sights when using Spencer sights?

What I'm going to describe will depend entirely on your eyes. If you have 20/20 distance vision, and are just beginning to need "readers", you may be able to have your optomotrist/opthamologist fit you with shooting glasses that have a focal length mid-way between the front and rear sights of your rifle.  The target will be slightly out-of-focus, but not badly.  Assuming you shoot pistol with your arms fully extended, this should suffice for sharpening the focus on the pistol.

Before running into your doctor's office with your rifle, I'd call him/her and ask if it would be okay to bring the piece in (probably in a carrying case). The rifle is held up to your shooting position and then the optics changed until you see both front and rear sight fairly sharply.

Good luck!

Hello:

Suggest you try stick-on dime-sized tape with ROUND holes ranging between 1/8" and 1/4".  Something this simple may produce enough sharpness.  Holes need to be cleanly cut.  If this works, get a MERIT OPTICAL suction cup attachable IRIS.  It works.
Try for sharpness of front sight with target and rear notch a little blurry.  The key is to be able to SEE the same sliver of light between the top of the sight blade and bottom of bull.  That gap is critical and why target shooters blacken the TOP surface of the blade to prevent reflections from distorting that visible gap.  Glasses must be SQUARE to both your eyeball and sights with head IN position.  If glasses are tipped In any direction, clarity suffers.

Bob Anderson, an accomplished N-SSA skirmisher, shared that a lead pencil line drawn across the rear side FLAT of the front sight blade MUST be VISIBLE or the "correction/device" is not working.  H'mmm.

Kevin

hatfield,

Is your Spencer Carbine an original?

If it is, then you are pretty much stuck with the placement of the original sights. That is to say, without modifying an original firearm.
Your best bet would be to find an Eye Doctor that can set you up with a glasses prescription that will help you keep the front sight in focus.

By the way, you set yourself up with some nice impressions.

Blair

hatfield,

Are you having trouble focusing on the front sight of a 20 inch barreled Italian made M-1865 Carbine? (or is it a Spencer RIFLE?)
If you are, go to your Eye Doctor to get your eyes checked, and prescription "shooting" glasses made up for you.

Blair

This helped me dramatically!  I simply attached it with silicone.

have you tried raising the rear ladder but leaving the elevation adjustment all the way down? just a suggestion.

Hello:
In addition to making sure that even the hooded post is fully blackened to prevent any reflections and trying an adjustable MERIT iris on your glasses, some have made a replacement rear sight bar with a round hole in it instead of a notch.  This has been called a "peep-slider".  While this is NOT N-SSA approved, it enhances the concentricity aspect of one's sight alignment/ picture.  Remember, if your front sight is fuzzy, you have a vision/ glasses/aperture SIZE issue.  It's best NOT to shift one's focus back and forth between the rear sight, front sight and target.  Let rear and target be slightly out of focus and concentrate on the front sight and a small, consistently maintained gap between the bottom of the bull and the top of the front post.  Don't look closely at your sight picture for more than 5 -6 seconds or your dropping oxygen level will increase blurring.  More than 6 seconds of concentrated focus on the front sight will actually "burn" the contrasting image of the bull into your rear eye receptors so that you see it in one place while the rifle has moved!  This can be observed by staring at a light bulb and closing your eyes.  Keep your eyes closed, turn aside and you can still "see" its after-image.  Be sure to blink your eyes before aiming to recoat your eyes with the same amount of moisture.  That BLINKING thing is SIGNIFICANT.
