In reviewing some of the past posts on M1865 serial numbers and the lack of data on which we're issued to specific
Regiments or individuals it was suggested that this info might be at the company level records as troopers were
Responsible for their firearms. Has anyone tried this?  If the company records for the 1866--1873 period still exist
It would take a serious investment in time to go thru them for even one regiment.

I have done some fairly extensive research on the 4th Cavalry in Texas during the Indian Wars and most Texas forts at the National Archives and haven't seen anything along the lines of those kinds of company records. Not saying they don't exist, but don't think they exist there.
