Those hollow-points gave just about perfect penetration and expansion with both guns on this test.  It is sometimes hard to judge the size of the tissue disruption but a ruff eyeball judgement call looked like less than two inches of temporary cavity within the block, did you measure that?

WOW :o

Very informative!!

Lead Hollowpoints, both look to be about the same as far as impact, and expansion. w30wcf said it may have held together better with a 20/1 mix....might have to try that next time.

SHOT 1, Rifle from 50 Yards (left side view) 1,187fps I think it was

SHOT 2, Revolver from 10 Feet(right side view) 900+ I think it was (later chronoed from 15ft

Pukin' Dog took two deer with his 44-40 loaded with Genuine Powder pushing Mav Dutchman bullets.  We weighed the bullets and they showed no tendency to fracture or fragment.  Both bullets were well upset and weighed 90% of cast weight.  Both deer died promptly.

Take a look at this poorly produced video at 1:51, it is the Mav Dutch!  I plan on another video with it later on. I expect it to punch straight through as all the hunting 200gr seem to do!

Please note that both of the bullets PD used were contained in the deer.  They did not punch straight thru.  They did upset well, kill promptly and had high weight retention.  This is premium performance for hunting bullets used on deer size animals.  When the meat was processed we found a lethal wound channel with very little hydrostatic damage surrounding it.  Having shot many deer with modern guns and ammo, I was impressed by the fact that so little meat was ruined with the old black powder ammo.

The ammo was loaded with 33 grains of FFg Schuetzen, LP primer and Mav Dutchman Big Lube®LLC bullets cast with 30:1 lead/tin alloy and lube sized to bore match.  This is the same gun and ammo that PD shoots at SASS matches.  Our gang will be using our 'Cowboy' guns stoked with black powder for deer hunting again this year.  I'll be shooting a Browning 92 chambered in 44 ELR (Extra Long Russian aka 44 Magnum) pushing Mav Dutchman bullets.  Pukin' Dog and Rotten Redeye Randy will both be running 44-40s.  If we have any luck I'll report back.

Excellent information.  Has anyone done this sort of work in the Cap-and-ball pistols?

What kind of velocity does he achieve with 33 grains?  Is the the 200 grain projectile?  I just oredered a hiney load from Whyte's.

Ah yes, I forgot to update my videos. Remember, I only use the 44 magnum frame Uberti and/or my Marlin 1894CB.

In the following video I used the Uberti 44 Magnum "Buckhorn" @ 10' from the muzzle.
