I live near Des Moines, Iowa and wonder where some of you men buy your Black Powder. I had 6 lbs of 3F Goex, 1000 #10 caps, wads, and .454 balls, and gave them all to my Nephew down in Kansas, when I was having my heart troubles, and now Iam in pretty good shape and want to shoot good old black again in a 1860 Army I've had for 30 years. Called all around with no luck. If anyone knows please let me know.
Thanks again,

Thanks for all your replys. Wish I knew some others that would like some Black 3F as ordering just for myself would be to exspensive. All my shooting Pals are gone now, and at 71 and a bad heart, probably won't be around long enough to use up 10 lbs. or more.
Thanks agin men for the help.

C'mon Reno! I'm 76 and I've got 13 pounds (splitting a 25 lb order)on order to bring me up to 25 for this year.

Noz, Iam glad for you, hope I make 100. They say the good die young, so that means I should live to about 102. Going to see if my Nephew might give back a couple pounds of the Goex I gave him.
Thanks for all the info.

Bass Pro has it.  You have to ask for it.  Only the Dept. mgr. can get it for you.  I'd call first just to be sure they have not changed.

Where near Des Moines?  I'm about 30 min south.  At 65 I still shoot, usually BP, 4 or 5 times a week.  It's a very good thing to have my own range.

Reno, Glad your feeling better......and, shooting an 1860 Colt can only help...I recommend shooting it frequently to continue improving spirits and health. Back in the days I lived in Ankeny, I made regular trips into "Ted's" gunshop for powder, balls & caps....but that place has been closed for (maybe) 40? years...wow. Ted was a good-ol boy & gave me a few basics on gunsmithing when I stopped in.

I'm located about 3 hours east of Des Moines..Last time I was in des Moines Bass-Pro the real BP was outrageously priced ~ around $30 /lb...and this was several years ago. Maybe some of you Des Moines area guys should get together on the next case order.
Cases always work for me, in fact I just restocked to get prepared for next year.

Best regards, Slim

Thanks to all again. Yesterday a friend gave me a pound of Goex Cartiage grade powder, and told me to try it in my 1860 Army cap and ball. I shot some a year or so ago but in 44/40 and 44 Colt, but have never tried it in C & B revolvers. I think it is about like 2 FF Goex only milder. Have any of you out there used it in you percussion guns.
Thanks

I've used Goex CGT in percussion rifles. Couldn't tell any difference b'tween it and 2F. Never tried it in a revolver though.

Cartridge is supposedly a granulation between 2f & 3F....So it should work ok. I tried a few cans of cartridge grade when it was introduced, and it was "okay", but don't recall charging my 1860's with it.... I had a case of something else (?) at the time and was using that stuff up in my C&B pistols and muzzleloaders. I'm not real choosy when it comes to black powder for C&B, pistols loads and general cowboy shooting, the formula of BP is the same for any breed, You move up the ladder incrementally with the more costly powders and will see some improvements in velocity & reduced fouling, but these will be small percentages - to be used when worthwhile.
That said, I've used the following in 44 Colt & Remington Armys with satisfactory results:
King Powder Co. 3F
Dupont 2F, 3F
Goex 2F, 3F, 4F
Elephant 2F, 3F, 4F
Black Diamond 2F, 3F
Kik 2F, 3F
Schuetzen 2F, 3F
Pyrodex RS, P
I used fairly light charges with the 4F powder....not my first choice in powder, but was adequate for the purpose of 5-10 yd cowboy shooting. Always seat projectiles firmly on the powder for best results.

I'm one of the more "notorious" BP shooters in the area, and as such friends tip me off when miscellaneous black powder and minor accessories are no longer wanted in someone's home. Once or twice I've even found a box of cool "stuff" sitting at my doorstep. I assure folks I will dispose of the powder, primers, etc in a safe manner... and it seems to ease their minds greatly.
