Progress on 1860 3 band

I've installed a new tumbler on my early 1860 3 band rifle and two of the band retaining springs had to be replaced. The only other
part I may install is a rear sight that a post Civil War owner had replaced with a buckhorn type. Is there a significant difference
between the carbine and rifle rear sights? I've seen the original carbine sights for sale here and there but not one described
as a rifle rear sight. I am also needing to do some derusting of the internal part of the receiver and thought I would use Naval jelly-
any suggestions here?

The 1860 carbine sight is the same as the rifle sight.  To clean the rusted lock internals use Evapo-rust.  You can find it at Auto Zone or the like.  Naval jelly will be too harsh on the metal, and Evapo-Rust can be reused and is environmentally safe.  I used it on a Spencer rifle I picked up that the bore looked like a sewer pipe.  After soaking in EvapoRust, the bore was shootable!  In fact shoot a 2 1/2 " group at 50 yards with black powder.   What is the serial # of your Spencer rifle?

treebeard,

Check with either S&S Firearms or Lodgewood Mfg on the difference in the rear sight of the 1860 Rifle and the Carbine.
By keying in either of these names on your favorite search engine, should connect you with them.
They are very similar... but different.
I hope this helps.

There is no difference between the 1860 carbine and rifle sight.

Blair

Two Flints, would you like to post photos or do you want me to?

Two Flints

Hi Blair,

If you have them handy by all means post them, or send them to me at fsgrand2@fairpoint.net, and I will post them for you in your last post.  I only suggest this if you don't have an online photo service like Photobucket that you use.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, here are the two sights!

Left is the Navy and Army RIFLE rear sight for ALL M-1860 Rifles!
Right is the rear sight for ALL M-1860 Carbine rear sights!
Does anybody notice a difference in the two?

Yes I noticed.  The one on the left is the model 1860 used on the rifle and carbine.  The one on the right is for the M1865.  Please see S&S on line catalog part #SP130 "for 1860 rifle and carbine".  Or reference Marcot's book.

Ok, Also from Marcot's book...

Sorry! I am having server issues at this time. I am unable to post the image I wished to post.

Rim fire--The serial no. is 4124 and Thanks for the Evapo-Rust tip. Blair Thanks for the sight pics as I now know what to look for
if I decide to replace the Buckhorn.
If Interested Two Flints posted pics on my serial no. request of 4/13/14.

Thanks for all the help--it's all I love about this board!

If you do by a reproduction rear sight, look for the one on the left in Blair's picture.  The same picture is on page 82 in Marcot's book, and it states "the left (sight) is the rear sight found on all model 1860 Spencer carbines and rifles.  On the right is the rear sight that was put on the model  1865, and model 1867, and New Model carbines and rifles.  I would hate to see you put the wrong sight on your 1860 rifle that appears to be in the Wilder brigade range.  Original M1860 sights go for between $135-160.  A good reproduction M1860 sight is made by Rich Cross.  They are sold through S&S and go for $85.  Best of luck.
