A question please.
« on: June 19, 2014, 10:53:09 PM »
I guys and gals, It`s been a while since I have posted but do drop in from time to time to read and learn.

My problem... When I case my leather and put in a baggie to place in the fridge so I can finish the next day, I often get tiny black mold spots show up. The latest one even had a pin head sized green spot on it that was covered up by a basket weave stamping but I would like to prevent this.

Question. Can I add a little Clorox bleach to my case spray bottle to prevent this from happening? What do you guys do to prevent it from happening? I used to use Tandy`s additive for casing and cant remember ever getting those spots. Maybe it has something in it that kills or retards mold? Once the leather is dry they don`t seem to grow. just several tiny specks like fly pxxp on my project. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,Chuck

Just use plain ole white vinegar - it will do the same as the bleach without all the nasties...after tooling/carving just hang the piece in front of a fan on low to eliminate the odor.
Using vinegar to get rid of mold and other surface nasties is pretty SOP in most saddle shops I've worked in...

Thanks Chuck. Why did I not think of that??? I use Vinagroon all the time and never have seen any mold there. Talk about not seeing the trees for the forest....  :-[ Thanks again, Chuck
