Just caught my own mistake--I meant to say I shot the Dragoons with stock nipples as slix shots are not available for them yet. I am going to order treso nipples for the Dragoons.

Navy six,
I have had to shim out nipples on several guns to get the right gap.

Since I have 14+ guns, I've been called the Imelda Marcos of Cap&Ball. Now, that's a COMPLIMENT!

I just sent a pair of 51's in 5 1/2" barrels to Lee's Gunsmithing to put on cap guards. It's a little pricey but I've seen his work it's great!

Thanks, hellgate, I hope they worked for you over the long haul. I am real anxious to get the Dragoons sorted out and using them at SASS matches. I have been promising myself to use the percussion pistols for a long time and am finally getting to it! By the way, even my wife shoots Blackpowder at the matches and has been noticing my tinkering this winter and said she might like to try them-like I don't have enough problems.

Navy Six, buy your wife a pair of the Pietta 51 Colt Navy US Marshals.  They are light, well balanced and the POA is much easier with the brass stub front sight looking through the hammer notch.  Believe Patti would enjoy shooting them

I would be happy to drive to Hamburg with you and on the way ... up the hill to Dixon's!
Be a nice birthday present  ;)

John Boy, nothing makes me happier than a trip to Dixon's. I believe my car knows how to get there on its own!! Birthday coming up in March, gotta scrounge up some more money as I spent a bundle there for Christmas.

Finally got both Uberti Dragoons out to the range for a workout. These both have Treso nipples installed. They were sucking caps like crazy the first time around (used JB weld in the safety notch). The load was 40gr. 2F Goex, #10 Rem. cap, felt wad and .454 round ball. As mentioned, i stoned back the hammer face until it was just barely short of the new nipples. Not one issue this time and each gun digested about 30 rounds.
I have seen a lot of debate about how close the hammer face can be to the nipple. I have installed both Treso and Slix-Shot nipples on most of my Ubertis'. I didn't record the dimensions(sorry) but all the new aftermarket nipples were longer than the stock Uberti ones. When I left the dimensions as is, I had nothing but cap problems on all the guns. Again, this with #10 Rem. caps. As I stoned back the hammer face to allow just a sliver of light(when the cylinder was held lightly by hand to the rear) the problems disappeared. And yes, before I did this the hammer notches were filled and all burs removed. This so far with six new Ubertis. I can't give you any engineering analysis of what took place, but I also can't ignore these consistent results. So it would appear that the extra length on the aftermarket nipples could possibly be an issue, given that each gun varies slightly in dimension.
Almost forgot--the darn Dragoons both dropped their loading levers about 75% of the time, even when I reduced the charge to 35gr. of 2F Goex. Will have to address the barrel catch / latch. Somebody hand me a file!   Navy Six
