King Medallion,
Thanks for the info.  I ordered some yesterday.  Pricey, but I want to see if they work any better than the ones I have been making out of 45-70 brass,  and I can re-use them, plus they have the correct head stamp.

One of my main reasons for not investing into a '76, back when they were more affordable, was due to the lack of available information on the ammunition.
Of course, what with the online information today, that information base has changed greatly. Problem now is I can't afford the buying the firearm.
My best,

I just got 20 45-60 cases from captech (Jamison), the rim was too big, wouldn't even fit in my shell holder, which is the 45-70, so I had to make the rims smaller, so it would even fit in the rifle I have.  I have a Uberti 1876 in 45-60.  I have read, I forgot where, that the Uberti has to use a smaller rimmed case, and the Chapparal 45-60 can use a shortened 45-70 case, without one's having to alter the rim.  Am I dreaming this, or is it true?  Please let me know.  Thanks. ???

doketx-

Jamison brass does have a thick rim. IFn you use a 45-60 shell holder the Jamison brass will fit into it as you have found out the Jamison brass won't fit into a 45-70 shell holder.

I have not had the problem you state about Jamison brass not working in the Uberti '76. Jamison works well in both of my '76's, I have a Uberti and a Chaparral.

Some folks like the Jamison Brass w/the headstamp... my opinion- go to Starline and buy 45-70 brass and then size it for the 45-60. Then you won't have that problem with the "thick" rim.  Jamison is too expensive for the product and I do not find that it is better than the 45-70 trimmed down, again my opinion.  The headstamp does not make it shoot any better... IF it did, more folks would buy it, pricey or not. For me, I bought 200 cartridges of Jamison 3 years ago before Jamison sold out... I shot it and was not impressed, but to each his own... I prefer the 45-70 cutdown plus the Starline 45-70 I do believe has thicker walls which will give you more shots before the brass breaks down. But I may be off on that so do not quote me on the wall thickness.

Tom, or James, whichever,
Thanks for the reply.  I guess my Uberti is just unusual;  I've been using trimmed down 45-70 brass, but I thought I' try the Jamison and see if it was any different.  I hope you're right, and there's not any improvement over the Starline, which is what I've been using with no problems, other than having to trim it down, which I have to do with the Jamison anyway.  I'm going to the range today;  I'll let you know if I see any appreciable difference.  I don't anticipate that I will.  Thanks a lot for your reply.

Dave-

As I stated... I do not have any problems with the Jamison brass and its "thick rim" in either the Uberti '76 or the Chaparral '76.  I found out early about the Jamison Brass not fitting into a 45-70 shell holder. I bought a Lee 45-60 die set and it came with a 45-60 shell holder (which I think is number 22). With the Lee 45-60 die set, I was not getting a tight enough crimp for the bullet. Even though I had shortened my magazine springs, my last round loaded the bullet would go into the case. To get a tighter crimp I ordered a Lee Factory Crimp Die for 45-70 and then I removed metal from the bottom of the die to conform to a 45-60 caliber (shorter). This solved that problem and now the 45-60's are crimped tighter and the last round the bullet does not go into the case. Hope that explanation is not confusing.

The ''76 is EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to Cartridge OAL of 2.250"... Ifn your cartridges go over this in length... you will have rifle jams when levering...The '76 is nothing more than a '73 on STEROIDS... Toggel Link rifles all have this problem, from the Henry (60); the '66 followed by the '73.  It seems that a lot of re-loaders forget this simple rule... and when they go to a match and the rifle jams because cartridge length is too long and you see them shake their head wondering what went wrong... not meant to offend anyone, but this happens quite frequently. But I am sure you know this. Laugh

Lee has a problem with there 45-60 dies . I had the same problem you had with the bullet pushing back into the case . I sent them a email and got a response , then they sent me another die which was the same as the first . So I cut down a 45-70 die and used it . Does anyone know if Lee finally fixed that problem . Now I'm not trashing Lee they make a good product at a fair price .

Rowdy -

The Lee product is good but with their 45-60 Die set I could never get a tight enough crimp and the last round loaded into the mag, the bullet would disappear into the case.  Soooo, like you, I took a 45-70 Factory Crimp Die and removed metal from the bottom and resized it so I could crimp 45-60. That solved my problem. Before that happened... I could never get the seating Die to put a crimp on the bullet that would keep the bullet in place.

I am told that if you send Lee a dummy cartridge (no powder or primer) they will make a Factory Crimp Die for the cartridge you send them... $25 to $35 price range give or take.  I have not done this, as the cut down 45-70 Factory Crimp Die solved my problem.

Happy Trail to you Rowdy....
