Requires years of counselling, is thet the same thing multiple wives have been giving me fer the past 50+ years?  Yep ever gun and fishing pole thet has ever come in the door was greeted by very long and loud counselling all right!  Counsellors have come and gone but the guns remain.

We often hear criticism of the Pietta combinations 'that never existed' but there is another possibility to be considered.  The .44 Colt Navy would have been very do-able by any skilled frontier gunsmith with some spare Colt parts on hand and a need to produce a little extra pocket change by marrying those Colt parts into a marketable project.  Re-boring a '51 barrel would be the most demanding part of the job but we know that was supposedly a common task on the frontier as far back as the plains rifle days.  Sounds as realistic as Tom Selleck returning from the CW and receiving a finely rendered R/M style Coversion before the CW was even over!

My question, could one simply replace a '60 Army grip frame set and barrel with those from a '51 Navy and what would the resulting gun look like?  I have actually seen documentation that claims the first Army models were shipped with Navy size grip frames and seven inch barrels, Colts original vision, but the Army supposedly requested those changes that were made??

Bob,
Well ..... Some yes and some ...... Maybe.  You have to stay within manufacturer.  Pietta or Uberti.  You can't mix Pietta with Uberti or vice versa.  You can mix Pietta with Pietta Nd you can mix Uberti with Uberti.
The 1860 is an 1851 frame with a relief cut to clear the two step 60 cylinder.  So swapping 51 stuff on a 60 frame is a matter of verifying the center axis of the bore and chamber.  Easily done with a range rod.  It'll look a mite funny with the gap at the water table though.  The grip frames and trigger guard are a no big deal.  Except, they won't quite fit.  They'll be a little proud or sub to the frame here and there but they'll work just fine.
Just don't put a .36 barrel out front of a .44 cylinder.  Bad Ju Ju that.

Navy Six

As bad as I have this OCD disease, I swear you guys are corrupting me further! Didn't think such a thing possible. I can't even count the guns I have and now you guys have me hoarding Brand New in the box guns. You know the ones, "these will make a fine project some day!!!" As if THAT isn't enough, now I'm looking at milling machines, lathes etc. so I can really step it up with the project guns. But I guess we'll fool them all in the end. so many of my friends retired recently and are all complaining about  "having nothing to do". In a few years when its my turn I'll be busier (and happier) than ever.  Best to You Guys,   Navy Six
