While I was mostly a stand up sailor, . . . occasionally I got a rebel streak going in me, . . . wanted a different belt buckle for wear aboard ship while out in the briney blue.

I took a regular brass uniform buckle, . . . tinned the outside of it, . . . tinned the back of a Hong Kong dollar, . . . stuck em together, . . . it's still somewhere upstairs in my "stuff".

You could take a rodeo belt buckle, wide enough to hold both the Kennedy's, . . . and do the same.  Just remember never to touch the front of the coins with the soldering gun, . . . lay a piece of copper or steel to transfer the heat through the coin when you are "putting them down", otherwise you'll get solder on the front of the coin.

I'd just buy a large rodeo buckle, . . . wire brush the area real good behind the coins, . . . and have at it.

He'd appreciate it even more, . . . knowing you made it, . . . I would think.

May God bless,
Dwight

Leather covered belt buckle with leather bezels would work. Tandy has kits and parts for under $10.00. The buckle blanks are available rectangle or oval. The first picture is of leather covered belt buckles as examples. Bezels could be cut from leather you would need two for each coin. The bottom bezel would be cut on the inside the same dimeter of the coin, the coin would sit in the bottom bezel. The top bezel would be cut slightly smaller then the coin and would hold the coin on the buckle. The bezels would be stitched to the buckle cover. Attached is a picture giving a rough demonstration. The bezels need to be cleaned up, burnished etc. Of course the buckle has not been covered with leather yet.

In the tinning process, . . . scratch up a place on the buckle for each coin with a wire brush or sandpaper.

Scratch up the back of one coin, . . . front of the other.

Using an electric soldering gun, . . . apply a small puddle of solder to the buckle where you scratched it, . . . make sure it sticks.

Apply a small puddle of solder to the coins where you scratched them, . . . make sure it sticks.

Let everything get cold (room temperature).

Lay both coins down on the buckle pretty close to where you want them, . . . place a nickel or something like that on the coin, . . . and transfer the heat of the soldering gun through the nickel, . . . through the Kennedy, . . . and when you see the coin kind of drop down on the buckle, . . . the solder has melted between the two, . . . count out about 10 seconds and turn off the gun and allow it all to cool.  Then do the second coin the same way you did the first one.  Tinning is just getting the little puddles of solder ready on the coins and on the buckle.

Dwight

I just wanted to add that I think it is a neat thing you are doing for your friend.

I don't know how wide spread it was, but I heard some of the cowboys of the old west would replace the rowels of their spurs with silver dollars.  That way they would always have a couple of bucks with them.

You are doing the same for him, . . . just in a different location on the body.

May God bless,
Dwight

GCR I though you were buying the double half dollar buckle with the half dollars in it for $36.00 or is it to much money. If you take the half dollars out and put yours in you can sell that year for about $12.00 each and you would only have $12.00 invested. Not every things free.. ;D ;D KT
Cheer up things could be worse, sure enough I cheered up and they got worse.
