Be careful which model . . . be sure it's really an early model and not an M-1865 rifle. Most M-1865s are marked, but a few of the early ones aren't, and some refinished ones have very weak, or non-existent markings, so you have to look at the frame, or check caliber, to see which you have . . .  a rifle with a low serial number isn't necessarily an M-1860.

A lot of the Spencer made M-1865s in the 2000 serial number range are rifles. I heard from a Mass. researcher that the state had an order for them at the end of the war, but lost touch with him before getting confirmation. I have seen a bunch, and shot two M-1865 rifles in that "serial number" range.

This is a model 1860 in 56-56.  Early brass outer tube.

Rim fire,

What do you mean by an "Early brass outer tube"?

The outer tube is the tube that screws into the receiver and fits in the butt stock that the mag tube fits into.  The early rifle tubes were made of brass-later rifles and carbines were made of steel.

I think my request for a S/N was lost in the dust so I try again.  My 1860 carbine s/n is 12484.  I shoot it in N-SSA and would love to know if it has any history.  May years ago I found "close numbers" issued to the 6th Ill. Cav.  I realize it is a early number.

Rfd,

Sorry  but I never received the serial # . . . how did you send it?  Email, PM?  I'm on my way out of state for a hospital visit in MA . . . when I get back on Saturday I will check the # for you, unless someone else can do it for me.  I don't have my  SRS info with me!!!

Where can I find information on a model 1865 serial # 13647?  Are there any primary source documents about production and sales dates, service records?

Blair

Webbm,

You Sir need to provide more info on the M-1865 you are asking about

Such as; Is it a Burnside Contract or Spencer M-1865, Carbine or Rifle?

Hi,

I am out of state right now, and my SRS books are home in Maine.  I don't believe that there is any info on 1865 Spencers marked as such.

Two Flints  BTW, are you joing my Spencer Shooting Society?  Please let me know.

It's a Spencer, not a Burnside.  It has a stabler cut off and was rebored to .50 cal.  It also has a sling swivel on the fore stock.

Webbm

sorry, I forgot your inquiry about carbine or rifle.  It's a carbine.

Two Flints,

Sure, I'll join the Spencer Shooting Society.  Do you have any other members in the Denver area?

I was USMC in VN Jan '68 thru Feb '69.  Naval Aviator - Flew CH-53A's, heavy lift resupply.  I always fired expert with the M-14.  I loved that rifle.  I always thought of the M-16 as a short range, brush gun.
