Slowhand Bob

Great lesson material and a very well spoken young man.  Naturally he was one of ours, a cowboy!

A percussion cap will not push a round ball down the bore.  It had to be a abnormally light charge of powder.

+1 on that. I experimented with Pyrodex pellets once, in one of my pistols, I think a Remington, they would not ignite at all, but the cap would push the ball just far enough to lock up the gun, ball stuck in the cylinder gap.

Forty Rod

If everything else is still sound, a new Uberti barrel could cure the problem and return the gun to use.  It won't solve the squib problem, though.

When doing my bit as the RO, I try to watch for squibs.  I've seen several and was able to stop the shooter before he shot another shot.  This is not always possible with a fast shooter.

Just goes to show ya.  Shoot guns with 3 inch barrels like mine.  That ball would have dribbled out the end of one of my barrels.  ;D

Coffinmaker,

Why shoot any revolver with any barrel length beyond the face of the cylinder?
Just a question.

Hi Blair, I don't quite understand that statement,,,no barrel?

Having said that, I did experiment with my Walker by removing the barrel, making a short collar to hold the cylinder in place and then replaced the wedge.

Loaded, (off pistol) with 20 grains of B/P and ball and tried it out at 10 yards.

6 hits on an A4 size target!!!!

So if you need a pocket pistol for any reason,,,,,,,,,,,,,that's my version of a Pepper box!

Good point Blair :o.  EMF had a real net gun a couple of years ago, just a '51 frame with about a 4 inch cylinder.  Unfortunately, at the time, I wasn't shooting Cap Guns.  Wish they'd bring em back.  No real practicality but uber KOOL!!

Blair

Coffinmaker,

In one of my gun books is a photo of an original 1860 Colt Army with "no" barrel. Just a screw in the arbor to hold the cylinder in place.
I'll have to see if I can find that image and try to post it here.

You are right about the fast shooter.  You get a gamer with a short stroked '73, and the squib wouldn't even have time to register in your brain, before he/she fired the next shot.

This is a somewhat poor photo of an 1851 Colt.
I am still looking for the 1860

Anyone remember the testing someone did in regards to capping cap&baller revolvers where..........

They fired a charge with no barrel to find the velosity and thus the ft/lbs of energy froman 1860 with no barrel........to mimic a chainfire out the side of the gun where the ball didn't hit anything. They ,whoever they were, reckoned the shot out the side with no barrel would not be lethal because of the slow velosity.

Barrels are there to raise pressures on the projectile and to stabilize it with rifling but,in the beginning, to raise pressures.

Of course at close range short barrels and "no barrels like Pepper Boxes" have killed. I guess it's all in bullet placement and how much infection kills the adversary so many days later.

I'd rather have a long pocket to put a long barrel pocket pistol in to feel better bout things. :o

The Elderly Kid

Read up on the death of Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son. Through an almost unbelievable set of coincidences and poor on-site gun and ammo management, a live primer in a supposedly dummy round pushed a slug into the barrel, then days later a full-power blank fired the bullet into Lee's body, killing him.
