I've decided to take the plunge into NCOWS, seems like a better fit for me than some other disciplines.  I live in south central Iowa so Springfield is an easy drive.

Questions:

Can I join NCOWS at the convention?

Can I participate in the convention not having period correct clothing?

What vendors will be there?  Can I get a basic outfit at the convention?

Any other suggestions/advice welcome.

Thanks

Major 2

1. Absolutely
2. sure
3. that is your best bet.... and there will a a smorgasbord to vendors > James County, Working Ranch,  River Junction and several more.
4. Can I get a basic outfit at the convention? one Hamilton Dry Goods has a 4 piece Starter shirt pants suspenders & Sox for $69

then there is the pre-own assortment, folks selling lost weigh or found weigh articles...

I'm looking forward to meeting you... seek me out..... Major (National Judge ) someone will point me out

Thanks for the information.  Seems kind of funny to me that I need to find a started "cowboy outfit" having worked range cattle in the mountains (that's another whole story), but I guess my nylon saddle bags and high visibility vest are probably not period correct.  ;)

Major 2

I suppose that is a misnomer "Starter:    Hamilton Dry Goods calls it a "Cowboy Special"
Having work range cattle in the mountains, you may see yourself in that profession.
There were so many more walks of life , beside Cowboy & Sheriff ... perhaps now assuming you have miles , you might be a Cattle Baron.
Blacksmith, banker , maybe a library stable owner....

high visibility vest no.... I'm not sure you wanted to be high visible.

19th century fashions were cut and sewn differently than today or even early 1900's  the 4 vendors I mention do good job.

You may want look are firearms that you plan or fancy to have.... look to that and figure your impression.

If you wish...I'll PM my Phone # .... and I'd field your questions

when planets align...do the deal !

Hamilton Dry goods special is a good price, but with the lace up shirt is doesn't seem to say "cowboy" to me, more like sodbuster  or some other laborer type?

I'm not yet an NCOWS member, but since I only live a little over an hour away, I plan on checking it out, at least part of the convention, and probably the shoot on Thursday.

Major 2, I've cowboyed the high country, was a Deputy Sheriff for 31 yrs., and a farrier (horse shoer) for longer than that.  I'm sure something will sort it's self out.  As to the weapons, I'll likely shoot Great Grandad's No 3 and or one of the clones, rifle is a '73, no shotgun as yet.

RCJ, with all due respect sir, I've never found the need for help in getting into trouble, do fine on my own. ;)

Major 2

G'dad's #3 and the 73 is all you'll need for Working Cowboy

At NCOWS we have 2 -3 and 4 gun categories...no need to rush the Shotgun purchase

At this stage of life if I don't rush it a bit, they'll throw dirt in my face before I get it done.  ;)

If you want to join NCOWS before the convention, send me a PM and I will send you my address to send the application and check.  It will speed up the normal process by about a month.  If you want to wait until convention that is great as well.

TJ, Garden grove is only about 45 min from us.  Wonder if he shoots with the Border Regulators.  Only met one NCOWS shooter, he happened to be from that posse.  His attitude helped sway me in the direction of NCOWS.  Now if I can just get that Schofield to shoot----

Will Ketchum

rdstrain49, I want to welcome you.  From our exchange regarding "another Schofield Question" you might think I am a cantankerous SOB, well I am but am actually friendly.  The problem with computer exchanges we can't get the nuances of the conversation.  I hope you do decide to become a member.  Iowa is the birth place of NCOWS.  There is an article about the founding of our organization in the current issue of "The Shootist", (our magazine).  I think you would find it interesting.

Our friend is a lady who does not shoot, she is a retired school teacher that taught with my wife down here in Texas.  She grew up on a farm outside of GG and went home upon retirement.  She is good people.  I tried to get her to shoot with us when she lived down here but she was too worried about not shooting well in front of other people.  You ought to see me. ;D  All the Border Regulators that I am acquainted with are good folks.
I hope to see you in Springfield.

Will Ketchum, I took no offense from our exchange.  Hope you did not either.  I'm just a bit disgusted with the Schofield.

Lawdog, don't know ''bout the warm part, but still breathing, much to the dismay of some.

TJ, Thanks for the sign up offer, I'll let you know.  Still want more information and exposure.

RD,  I am an NCOWS member from eastern Iowa, I belong to the Phoenix irregular guard, we shoot at a range 20
miles east of Des Moines. My wife and I will be at the convention, look forward to meeting you. I can really get you
in trouble, shooting buffalo guns, building a period camp, brain tanning your own buckskin, the list goes on.

Bear Tooth, if you get down this way look me up.  The coffee is always on and my range is usually cleared of snow, usually.
