Hi,  I'm just getting started in CAS because a range opened close to home and they are starting some cowboy action shooting.  I have some of the guns I need and have gone twice to practices.  I have a Ruger Vaquero from 1993 with the hardened steel finish and 7 1/2" barrel.  I don't know if I should wait and try to find another of that gun to match, or buy another Ruger I might like and use unmatched handguns.  Does everyone usually use matching six guns?  It does look nice, but then maybe there is a reason not too have them match.  Like I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on it, yet anyway.  The possibilities as I see them now are another Ruger with 7 1/2" barrel, but a new one.  Or maybe a 5 1/2" barrel and cross draw holster.  Get grips that match at least eventually.

Any ideas for me on what people do?

Howdy and welcome!  This topic comes up every so often.  Here one such discussion:

The more competitive you are, the more likely you will want matching shooters.  Otherwise, shoot whatever you want!

Thanks Abilene. That summed it up pretty well.

4 3/4" barrels. If you get crossdraw, learn the Idaho John reholster.

One fellow I shoot with has a 7-1/2" in a cross draw and a shorter barreled pistol on his strong side.

The New Vaqueros are a different size than your 93 Vaquero. They're Colt sized frames now. You outta look for a old Vaquero, there's usually bargains out there. Good luck.

Thanks Rye.  Found an old Vaquero to match what I had on gunbroker.com.  Good advice.

Fantastic you were able to find an original model vaquero.  I managed to find two stainless 7.5 inchers over the past several years, one on Gun Broker and the other on the Ruger Forum, the one on Ruger forum was local, what were the odds on that.  Met him at Costco to pick it up at the agreed price, paid him and he handed me back $50 that would have cost him to ship it to me!!!! wow.
