Stainless Steele:  what a great alias.   :D

Sorry, sometimes these things just overtake me and I can't help myself.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question.

Black Powder.  Lots of it.  A steady diet of it.  As much and as often as you can.  Repeat frequently all the time.

You know all that dark gray stuff on the front of stainless cylinders? That my dear sir is smokeless fouling. To remove, load up with BP and have some fun.  Then when you clean them up the gray ring is now stainless steele.

Actually my post was more about fishing gear. Just figured this bunch of shooters
would be more knowledgeable bout metals than the go fishing crowd. TJ :)

Caswell sells darkening liquid and I think gels for stainless steel but I have never personally tried it. Reviews on the products pages are good but I only trust those so far.

As a knifemaker I see the discussion come up about darkening with this formula but never have had any first hand feedback. You might try searching some of the knife forums like Blade forum and do a search.

If you try it let us know how it works and how durable it is.

Yes.  Black Powder.  That's what I said. ;)

The more carburized iron (steel) one combines with Nickel, the tougher one can make Stainless steel.
Nickel by itself does not make carbon steel or stainless "steel"!
But, then what do I know?

Black Powder.  My final, fun-est answer.

(Pssst.  It might not make the stainless black, but after a few cylinder's full you'll forget all about trying to stain it and just think about how much fun you're having. ;D)

Yes it can, and just as black as regular steel. The guy that could have told you exactly how was chased off of these forums a while back. I know because he had a stainless gun blued for me. I will PM you with his email address.
