I know that the original .44 colt cartridges where suppose to be .454 Dia. does any one know what the grove dia in a Taylors open top is? I just brought a Taylors, open top in .44 colt.  and I've sure i've got bullets for it. but what size???

.429 is what they are supposed to be.  Use .430 cast.

For Uberti products, even though you bought it from Taylors(same manufacturer), Cimarron has a listing on their web-site for Uberti products. Go way to the bottom of their home web page. Under 'Product Support' click 'Bore-Groove-Twist' and they list the info. For 44 Colt they list: 16" right hand twist---.417 Bore---and a .429 Groove (with 6 grooves). As Mean Bob posted, go with .430 lead. I have a Richards II and a Open Top (Uberti's) chambered in 44 Spec, but shoot 44 Colt, using blk powder and a soft lead Mav Dutchman bullet. The .430 dia works real well. Have shot 44 Spec using smk less powder also, no complaints.

thank you, I"m shoooting a 1872 open top now with .430 bullets and tumbled lubed, it's very accurate.  but the 7.5 inch barrel is a bit long for cowboy shooting. but I just ordered another one so I guess I had better learn to draw it quicker,,,, and put it back quicker. I'm shooting a C-mason in .44 special. I"ve spent the last four days shooting it, reloading the brass and filing on the back of the barrel to keep it from cleaning the suet off the front of the cylinder! ok, it drags a bit. I"m not a big fan of the C-mason revolvers.
The one I ordered says on the box it's for .44 colt,,,,,, but the Taylors gun smith says it a .44 special cylinder. so .44 colt will work in it.  I like the sights on the 72's barrel.

Pakm:     When I purchased my '72 Open Top, I ordered it from Cimarron in 44 Special so I could shoot both Specials and 44 Colt in it. I was told by Cimarron that the cylinder was chambered for 44 Spec, but that the barrel was stamped 44 Colt. This was because they had shooters who wanted a gun chambered in 44 Spec but didn't want it stamped on the gun. "Wouldn't look period correct to have a gun from the early 1870's to be shooting a cartridge that didn't come out until 1907"! Anyway it's a shooter. My Richards II is chambered for 44 Spec and stamped 44 Special. A shooter too!
You don't have your wedge in too tight causing the binding?

I think my wedge is ok, I finally got enough clearance for the gun to work,( the barrel was scraping the powder residue off the front of the cylinder up till now. there was no daylight between the barrel and cylinder  I think i'm up to about 2 thousandth now? but I got another 7.5 inch 1872 in  .44 special coming(like you said, it's marked .44 colt, but I assured it in .44 special. and the cylinder was hitting the frame. I cleaned up the frame a little and that helped also.(emery cloth).
