Lots of brass, now, too much time. . .

Howdy Pards,

I was pawing around under my loading bench and discovered a bucket of primed 45-70 brass.  So I'm becoming acquainted with my data again.  I've been using 4.3cc of Old Einsford 1.5 Fg under a 1/8" over powder card and under 45-70 Big Lube 500 grain lubed with PL-II.  I've oriented the brass over the Mfg case head mark, in this case *-* brass with a witness sharpee mark on the case head and a stripe up the side.  Sure, it takes time, but when I shoot these carefully made cartridges, I'll know that it's me that makes the score, good or bad.

Wish me luck.  My eyes have a defecate from a stroke and I have to shoot with a scope now.  But, if I can see it, I can hit it. . .

What do you shoot in a 45-70?  Scope or no scope, sounds fun!

Many SASS matches have long distance side matches.  I really enjoy shooting these.  I ran the LD side match at Reconing on the Rock at the Beloit Rifle Club last season.  We had a row of shooters shooting at 100 yd, 200 yd and 300 yd targets.  I came in 2nd and got paper. .

The Remington Rolling Block 45-70 started out it's life as a .43 Spanish and was restored and re-barreled to 45-70.  It could easily have been reamed out to 45-90 or more but I went with the 45-70 because of brass availability and brass cost.  Also, dies are easy to come by for the 45-70.

The bullets I load are the Big Lube® 45-70 500 semi spitzer twin lube grove design.  They haul so much lube that the fouling stays soft and blows out with each following shot.  I never clean till after the match.  You can see this bullet here. . . http://www.biglube.com/BulletMolds.aspx?ItemID=ee9296e2-2e6e-4f1c-b5cf-53935ced106c

I do use a Malcolm scope with external adjustments because of my eyes.  So far, no one has complained.

Hold center!
