SOme of you may have notice that the early 56-50 dies sets from Lymann had a problem.

The expander plug was not tapered correctly for Starline brass, and would deform the case outward if you used it deep enough to bell the case mouth.  I believe it was just a 50-70 expander plug turned to .512.  I had to shorten  and grind on my original set.  The good news is that current production set I just got fresh from Tammy, who got them fresh from Lymann has corrected this.  If you have the old style, I would give them a call, and they should send you the new expander plug.

Thanks for the info.  I am waiting for mine to come in through Midway.  They are on backorder.  Hope soon.

Tuolumne,

The sizer die in my Lyman set has a 50R stamped on the bottom edge.  Is this correct for the 'new' sizer plug?  Without the correct shellhoder I could not test it.

Thanks

Black River Smith,

If the expander plug just has the bottom edge rounded off then it is a standard 50-70 expander and will bulge the 56-50 case near the bottom at the web when inserted far enough to bell the case mouth.  If it is made with a taper about 1/4"-3/8" long at the bottom then it has been modified for the shorter 56-50 case.  This is how Lyman modified my expander plug when I returned the dies to them originally.  The modified plug also works for th 50-70 case except when using long bullets seated deep.

Once again thanks for the info.  The plug is flat on the bottom and then does have the taper that you described.

That's good.

Thanks,
