Made this short starter and loading block,out of Mesquite and antler picked up on the ranch. Rattlesnake hat band was from one that tried to bite me last spring on said ranch. Shot from the old Colt's changed his mind. Working on some fresh deer hide's for ,possibles bag and rifle case fer my JBMR, Gives me somthing to wittle on in the evening's ,,,,,,,,,,Dusty

That's cool!  Winter projects are always good, although I generally run out of winter well before I've got half of them done!

Dusty, nice work, and I for one am glad said buzztail ended up as a hatband instead of you ending up on antivenin. Are you braintanning those deer hides? Tawing them?

It's the small personal touches that I love about this hobby. Dusty, that is excellent that you used local materials on your free time just as it would have been over a century and a half ago. The snakeband on your hat has personal all over it. You're a true American the way Americans were supposed to be made my friend.

Yes Sir Oregon Bill ,trying my hand at brain tanning a few deer hide. Lot's of work but think it will be worth it. Have 9 hides so far. should end up with 25 or so total for the season. Dont know how many will get tanned or made into rawhide. Think you hit the nail on the head, Dave the home made possibles are the one,s that say who you are. Like the oldtimer's, Make what you can only buy what ya cant.,,,,,,,Dusty

Dusty, that's a lot o' hide to braintan. Just a heads up: be careful if you have any open sores or cuts on your hands while handling the raw stuff. It's an excellent source of staph infections which then and now are NO DARNED FUN.
