Alternatives to the semi-buckhorn rear sight

Hi Guys,

I have a new Uberti 1873 Special Sporting Short rifle with the semi-buckhorn rear sight. Is there a better alternative barr a tang sight? I don't like the "horns" as I instinctively use the top of the horns to line up the front sight before realising my mistake.

I know Marbles make the flap top sight which looks to be the best bet so far. Would it better to buy a new flat top sight or can the semi-buckhorn be modified and the "horns" cut off?

Are there any other rear sights which are SASS approved which has both elevation and windage adjustment? The sights at the moment have the correct elevation but shoots to the right and iIm not a fan of drifting the sight to get the windage correct.

Thanks.

Abilene

I'm not aware of any SASS-legal sights with adjustable windage, but there might be something out there.  Drifting the sight in its dovetail is easy enough.  Usually doesn't take much.  Some folks do file off the horns to make the sight a flat top, and some buy the replacement.  If you find yourself placing the front sight too high in the rear sight, you may be able to adjust the elevation so that particular sight picture is "correct."

Liberally wrap around the stock Uberti rear sight (keeps the swarf from between barrel and fore stock) and with a nice sharp bastard file, remove the "horns" down to the "u" notch.  Polish off the tool marks mad cold blue. Atzit.

Can anyone tell me if the Marbles flat-top rear sight is SASS-legal? Reading the SASS manual all it says is that it must be period correct.

Also the manual states that modern style click-adjustable sights are not allowed. Does this include screw-adjustment (windage) rear sights (Marbles)?

Thanks.

This type is legal:

except you have to blacken the white diamond (or turn the insert around).  I do not believe the type with the screw-adjustable windage is legal.  Drifting a sight in its dovetail for windage adjustment is not difficult and generally only needs to be done once.
