When is the earliest use of a Bird's Head Grip on a SAA? I'm sure it was a very recent modification but then again there always was a Custom Shop.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Forty Rod

Probably about 2001 as near as I can tell.  I've never seen nor heard of one on a Colt, only on clones.

Forty Rod is right.  I packed an 1878 41 caliber DA in my chap pocket for years, until I wore it out about the year 2000.  Cimarron came out with their "Thunderer" about (in?) 2001 and I ordered a grip frame and stuck it on a Uberti 45 SA Sheriffs Model that was factory stocked with a "birdshead" to help control the recoil produced by heavy charges of smokeless.

Each to their own.  Ten plus years later, I think the stock plow handle grips of the SA (Ruger, Colt or Repro) are really hard to beat.  The grips for the 1878 Colt though really fit that pistol.
