Howdy Boys.

I'm wanting to get a barrel mounted aperture sight setup on my Uberti '73 carbine and wanted to ask if any of you have tried the Pioneer Gun Works replacement front barrel band speed sight in combination with the Marbles full buckhorn rear?

What I'm in particular wondering is if the relative heights of the two sights are compatible in terms of getting the front bead centered in the middle of the buckhorn for a sight picture similar to that used with a tang sight.

My load is a two hundred grain lead bullet in front of 34gr. of 3f Goex. I'm guestimating a circa 1100fps velocity.

I zero at either 25yds for small game or 100 for deer.

I have the Pioneer GW barrel band speed sight on my 1873 carbine.  I use it in combination with the standard carbine sporting leaf sight and it works very well for me.  I did have to open up the notch on the rear sight to accommodate that "door knob" of a front sight! ;D

Williams Gun Sight & Brownell's both have a very good articles on the proper way to measure & select Front & rear iron sights.
When you do it properly, the guess work is eliminated.

BTW; if you are going to use the piece for hunting I would not use the Pioneer door knob. The Pioneer is used for competition, and big up close targets.

wyldwylliam, keep in mind that a standard buckhorn sight may not have room to mount on a carbine barrel unless you mount it backwards, which shortens the sight radius (and looks a little odd).  The dovetail in the carbine barrels vary in location but tend to be closer to the receiver than the octagon barrels.  You will need a short-shank model.  Maybe you already knew that.

As for the heights of the sights, I'd think the adjustable elevation on the rear would take care of that, but don't know for sure.

Lefty Dude has a good point regarding big front sight beads.  In fact, using a full buckhorn rear as a ghost ring seems a lot like a "speed" setup as opposed to accuracy.  But I don't hunt with my '73's so what do I know?  I have a very small bead on my '66 which I like for accuracy.  Fortunately my eyes are still good enough to see it.

Thanks very much Gents. These replies pretty much answered what I needed to know. Without seeing that front sight up close it was hard to tell how big the bead was. Obviously too big for my needs. Thanks again.
