Need a favor.
« on: October 04, 2013, 03:26:05 PM »
I was just wondering if I could get someone with an original 1858-1863 Remington Army revolver to send me a outline of the grip panels.
PM  me and I will send you a self addressed stamped  envelope to send the tracing .
I know that I go over board with trying to be History correct at times ,,, but I can't help it!
If I use a Remington  ,, then I want it to be as close to the original as I can get.
Hope to hear from somebody ;D

I have no proof but what I've read is an original Beals model was taken to europe and that was the pattern that Euroarms used to produce their Remingtons. They look like a transition between the Beals and the 1863 New Model Army. They are overall smaller in both grip and frame than the Piettas. Where they vary from what originals I've seen is where the barrel inserts into the frame there is more "meat" on the frame. i.e. there is a bit of a step down to the barrel whereas the originals have a very smooth transition from frame to barrel and little or no step down to the barrel as seen on the profile view. The Ubertis have the correct profile but are a smidge larger in both grip, frame and weight compared to the Euroarms/Armi San Poualo(?). The Piettas are overall larger and heavier than the aformentioned makes. I don't know about the ASM versions as I have never owned one.

Willy,

I have two original NM 1863 Remington Army revolvers
Both have been converted to cartridge. There maybe some slight differences due to wear and age.
I can do either tracings of each grip panel for you or do a scan of the grips and e-mail them to you.
My E-mail is listed in my profile.
My best,

Willy

I have a few originals, converted and not......
Each one of them has a different shape to the grip and just like a Colts SAA the frames were all sanded to the grips to blend them before final finishing so "no two are the same" as has been said many times on the boards.

I have experimented quite a bit with what, I think, you are wanting to do and my advice is to attempt to get as much room as you need behind the trigger guard (the originals are quite thin) and then make them "feel right". Just keep them in line with what they "should" look like and you'll be good to go!

HH,

I very much agree with what you are suggesting.

This is why I informed him that there my be some difference within my posting.
Also I offered a tracing and or a scan.
The tracing will be about 1/32 of an inch oversized from the original.
A scan of the same grip panels will be more accurate, providing his computer does nothing to change the outline of what I sent him.
He got what he asked for. "Tracings"
That is the best I can offer1

Blair sent me the tracings of two originals that he has.
I cut the tracing out, cutting on the inside of the line.
When laid it on my grip it was almost a perfect fit except that the originals has a smaller curved top where it fit in the frame cut out.
I did thin the grips girth a bit though.
From pictures I have seen I think I'm pretty close to what an original Remington looked and felt like.
Thanks again Blair :)
