I just receive a message from a buddy who I made a regular pants belt for and dyed it with fiebings black oil dye. He asked what I had dyed it with because it smelt horribly like burnt popcorn. Has anybody ever had a problem with this? And is there any suggestions as to why it would do that and how to stop it. I'd rather fix his belt then make a whole new one if I don't have too.

I don't know that the black smells much worse than the other oil dye but now that you mention I think it does smell a little different.

Biggest problem I've had with the black dye (oil and usmc black) is that it will rub off bad.

Did you used Neatsfoot oil on it? That can smell like popcorn. .

I'm using this:

Though for the most part I am using vinigaroon for black.  I still use fiebings for quite a lot of colours

I thought it was weird cause I've never had a problem like this before with any of the oil dyes. I put a coat of olive oil on it a couple days before I shipped it to him. He put another coat on it and now it doesn't stink anymore
