In making a thumb break style cross draw belt holster for my Ruger single action, I find myself wondering what is appropriate to use as a stiffener on the thumb break. A modern holster will often use a steel  tab riveted to the leather. What might be more period correct? Double thickness leather? Would a steel tab be too "out there"? Don

Tall bald what period are you trying for I can't remember ever seeing an 1800's holster withe a thumb break. ;) You can always put the metal stiffner between the layers of leather just stitch it in place and you would not even need rivets.

Try a thick piece of raw hide (available at leather Factory)

Your working on a modern invention so I wouldn't be concerned with what material I used. Just use what works.
