???Two Flints-Thanks for your comments on my nickel plated Spencer carbine.I do have a couple more things to offer, that I should have brought up in my first post.In the book"Bugles,Banners and War Bonnets" on pages 275 through 285 there are tables showing "Summary Statements of ORD. AND ORD. STORES IN THE HANDS OF TROOPS" for the 7th Cavalry. On page 276 for 3rd quarter-Sept. 30,1871,under Spencer Rifled 50 cal. They show the armory at Shelbyville,KY having"20 Nickeled & 59 Plain.
which I think shows that the Army did purchase nickeled carbines for the cavalry. Also,on the buttstock of my carbine, although the wood is worn down, with a strong magnifying glass,I can make out the remains of a cartouche, with what I believe to be the initials CSL.If this is correct, these initials could possibly be those of Cyrus S. Leonard,a civilian sub inspector.I realize this is pretty much conjecture on my part, but at least it's food for thought. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions,I would really like to hear them,so maybe I can get a bit more provenance on this Spencer.Thaks to all in advance for any help you can give me.
Ken
