All,My 1865 Carbine is a great shooter and I continue to buy custom loads from GAD Custom Reloads (a lot of people have had bad dealings with Bernold, but he is cheap and slow) I have questions, my carbine does not have the stabler cut off (it has the small set screw) is there any advantage to adding this?  I have plan specs for one, or does anyone sell them original or reproductions? Shoots fine without of course.

He may be able to help you out.  I'm pretty sure their Stabler Cutoff unit is designed for the 1865 Spencer.

Out of curiosity which extractor do you have?

Herbert

Also out of curiosity do you know the twist rate in your Spencer,my 1865 Burncide Spencer has a 1 in 34 inch twist rate and it shoots very well(2 to 3 inch 5 shot groups at 100 meters when I do my part),I was wondering if the Spencer made ones have the same twist rate ,I have handled plenty but have never measured the twist rate for some reason, the 1865 Spencers should all have the long blade extractor with spring asist

General Lee

The carbine has the blade type extractor on the left, works pretty good

General Lee

I will check the rifling twist

General Lee, you said that your M1865 was not modified for the Stabler device? Is your carbine an original or replica? If its an original, you will need to replace the lower block with one of the Stabler modified lower blocks, as the little switch in front of the trigger  is merely half the modification required and will not work without the modified lower block installed. What you may like better is to get one of the M1867 Spencer cutoffs which is a modification to the magazine follower guide, and merely requires being switched out with the standard guide. No other modification is necessary. Just a thought.
