Howdy Fellers.

Just picked up a dandy Uberti .44wcf carbine to go with my '76 and it is a really fine and accurate little gun. However, a former owner, in slicking it up for CAS, removed the saddle ring while leaving the staple on the gun.

Can anyone tell me how to remove this staple so I can put the ring back on? I'm hoping I don't have to do a complete tear-down as I'm the kind of guy who ends up with parts left over. ;D

Lefty Dude

Remove the stock first, very easy. Large screw/bolt on the rear upper tang. Then flip the piece over, and remove the rear tang wood screw. Use the proper size screwdriver so you do not bugger up the screw slot. Now very carefully pull the stock from the tangs, do not twist pull straight back with the stock angle. Once the stock is removed you will be able to access a nut that holds the staple on the receiver. Remove this nut and the staple will come out of it's holes from the side of the receiver. Only one side of the staple is threaded.

I own two Carbines. My Match carbine I removed both the ring and staple. Not good for a Left handed shooter. The other I left as is, it is my back-up piece.

Hope this helps.

Hey Lefty, thanks a lot for the good info. I got the buttstock off and can see the little nut in there, but as the original mainspring has been replaced with coils and I don't know what all else in there, there is no room to get at it with any tools I have. I'm going to have to look for a tiny open-ended wrench to get it off, looks like.

Don't know if they make a wrench that small but I'm going to hunt for one. If I can't locate it, I'll either just leave things as they are or take out all the guts and have at it that way.

St. George

An ignition wrench can be used.

If you are going to use it for competition the saddle ring is a pain in the butt.  It rattles, gets in the way when staging, etc.  If the original owner converted the mainspring to coil he was probably using it in competition and took the ring off for a reason.  And what do you mean by "coils?"  Is there more than one coil spring in there?

Thanks for the tip St. George, I shall ride over to the car parts emporium tomorrow and have a look.

And Pettifogger, no, didn't meant to say there were a bunch in there, just what's necessary. I bought it for hunting and plinking so don't need a racing gun, just happened to be the way it came to me. I do have all the original parts which I may well put back in. It sure runs nice the way it is though.
