My wife's 20 ga SXS breaks open after the first shot. Wassamadda her gun?

A friend worked on the opening lever spring and I think he removed too many coils.

Am I on the right track? What else could be the problem?

Try stretching the spring Todd.  I likely doesn't need much.

I don't think I'd be successful in doing that. Pretty tough stuff - and I'm not!

If the spring is the problem, I can get a replacement.

On the other hand, I'm headed your way for an IDPA event on the week end I could put it in your hands with some ammo.  :>)

My wife's was just doing the exact same thing. The locking bolt spring was weak. Recoiled made it moved and opened the action. I removed it and put a washer behind it and problem solved. Very easy to do.
