1887 shotgun and reducing recoil

Greetings,

I just acquired this model shotgun and need to do something to reduce the recoil.  No, this is not a wcse whatever that model is called from Coyote Cap.  This is one that has a Lassiter action job on it; imported by IAC.  It shoots great.  Slick even.  BUT... there is no pad on it.  Just the plastic butt cover.  I took that off and the stock is solid.  My questions are this:

Can I simply drill out a place for one of those mercury recoil reducers and insert that?

Then how big a pad should I put on it?

The original 1887's already have the hole for that recoil reducer. You just have to get the right size reducer. they come in at least two sizes. The hole that it goes into is the hole that the mounting bolt for the stock is in. If I remember correctly it's 3/4". Just remove the butplate and you will see it. Measure the hole, buy the right size reducer and you are in business. Some folks (like me for instance) place a thick leather pad, about 7 or 8 oz leather between the reducer and the mounting bolt to reduce then metal to metal wear on the reducer.  don't know about the Chinese made 97's, but they must mount that stock somehow and my guess is that they do it the same way as every other gun maker, by drilling out the butstock and placing the mounting bilt in there. Ih yeah, put a string on that leather pad and lead it oput past the reducer to the butplate so that you can easily get that pad out of there so that you can get your screwdriver onto the mounting bolt. Ask me how I know this.

Well ........ I'm a wusse.  Don't like recoil at all.  No siree.  So ..... All my shotguns have 1 inch thick Pachmyre (spell) recoil pads on em.  I've found with Winchester Low Noise, Low Recoil 12Ga (Featherlights), an inside the stock reducer isn't necessary (for me at least).  Depending on the finish of the gun, I'll install either a brown or black pad, WITHOUT the white line.  Don't forget to change the toe angle to about minus 5 degrees.

Or you could do like the character in the Monte Walsh movie, and tie a piece of sheepskin on the butt.

If you google MPC Shooting Accessories they have several mercury reducers that slip into the bolthole on the stock.  3 different diameters and some different weights.  They have a 1/4" x 20 tapped hole in the back so you can thread a bolt
into the end if you need to pull it out and remove the stock for any reason.  Pricing was about $40 plus S & H last I looked.

If reduced power loads don't reduce the recoil enough for your particular taste, you might try one of the recoil shields that you wear under your shirt. It is invisible, so you don't change the look of your shotgun and they are invisible under your shirt.

Here's the no frills solution.

-Remove the buttplate. Drill a hole about 3/4" wide (or 2 if you want) from 1" to about 3" into the stock.
-Find a brass rod with a 1" diameter slightly longer than the holes you drilled.
-Turn it so that it fits snugly into the buttstock hole(s) and flush with the end of the stock.
-Put buttplate back on.

Extra things you can do are a negative angle on the stock but this will make the gun roll upwards as the energy has to go somewhere. Lighter loads help a lot. Remove any choke that might be in the barrels and cut the forcing cones angles as gently as possible.

A final solution would be to stop being such a girlyman...... ;D ;)

cal44walker - Did you really mean this?
"A final solution would be to stop being such a girlyman......  "

Firstly, why do so many people think that men should just ignore or even enjoy pain and discomfort?
Secondly, why do so many people think that women can't? Try having a baby and then tell me about what pain women can and do endure, many of them several times in their lives.

Just out of interest.....did you notice the 2 smileys just behind the comment? For your future reference, those indicate a friendly jab at someone in something called "jest". It is a common trait of homosapians who are socially and intelectually able to distinguish a serious insult from a friendly "poke".

That is about the only polite (and legal on this board) way to explain this to you. I did have another way to explain it which involved Crisco, but I did'nt want to get banned for life from the forum.......

It's many a truth that are said in jest. Your post could also be interpreted as gynophobic or misogynistic. ;D ???
