1872 LATE MODEL OPEN-TOP — 7-1/2 Uberti

Hi

I'm considering buying an 1872 LATE MODEL OPEN-TOP — 7-1/2 Ubeti  in .45 LC for the simple reason that the grip is supposed to be bigger.  Before I drive anywhere looking, I'd like to know if I can shoot a 250 grain Lead Round Nose bullet with Trail Boss powder in it without tearing it up?  The min and max load for Trail Boss in .45 LC is 4.5 and 5.8 grains (12.700 psi) respectively. 

From what I've read here, I think I'll be o.k.

Of course you can. And it sounds like you want an open top with the army grip which is longer than the navy grip. They offer both fyi. Good luck

The gun will handle any SAAMI spec ammo.  But the heavier the load, the harder it is on the gun.  If it were me, I would use a 200gr bullet, and loads on the lower end of the loading data if I wanted to shoot smokeless in it.  Using Schofield brass or even the Cowboy 45 Spcl brass would be even easier on it.  Well, actually, if it were me I would buy it in 44 Spcl with a Navy grip    But ya know, if we all liked the same thing it would be pretty boring.

All of my pistol shooting to date has been with a 1911 both in .45 ACP and in .22LR so the SAA grip is really difficult for me at this point.  I think that H and H in OKC has an open top, so I'll go by and look at it.  I would LOVE to be able to shoot the same load in my 92 Rossi, SAA, and an open top, but I'm not holding my breath either.  If it turns out I LOVE the bigger grip, getting a bunch of Scholfield brass may be an option.
