I am interested to read about the different lubes used. Not sure what to use in my new pot.

I started several threads on this on various boards and also asked at Cobra.  Nobody had anything useful to suggest.  I am currently using an old spray can of lube from my sail making endeavours.  The key is you need something that won't rot or stain your leather or thread, and that will work for the intended purpose.  Most formulas appear to be silicone based.

This is the real stuff, probably Weaver has something similar:

This is the main product that seems to be sold in normal places, I don't know if it would work, but I want to try it:

This is another industrial product.  Don't know if it works on leather, one could ask:

Interesting no one else has responded. Apparently lube pots are not popular. Thanks Massive.

I have stated my success with saddle soap. Vinagroon will not penetrate so I have to lightly scub with a cloth. Then it does fine.  VOO does the same.

May try a light saddle soap to water mix. I would not think it would require much to provide sufficient lubricant. Maybe the next trip to Zack White I will pick up some "factory" lube.

Red cent, nothing to do with lube pots. (I am temporarily hijacking thread). Any chance of getting a better look at the setup you are wearing in your avatar? The avatar is small and a little dark in spots a little hard to see your rig.

I know what you mean, though:  They sell the pots all over; They are even supplied with some of the machines; the industrial sewers obviously buy the oil by the tanker load.  John Bianchi runs one.  The president of his company posts over on Leatherworker, I don't know if he answers PMs, but I will try him.

Of course one reasons for lube is the speed at which factory guys run their machines.  I have one Singer machine that was developed to run at 4000 stitches a minute indefinitely.  At that speed one needs lube to cool the needle, not our problem.  We might have the opposite problem, running so low the the thread bonds to the glue in laminates.  Just a guess.

I got one of the little magnetic ones and some lube from Weaver. I'm not sure it helps much, when the machine sits for a period of time it does soak into the thread to the point it is noticeable but it doesn't seem to wipe enough on the thread when sewing.

Camano, those are  Brigade Leather, Liberty model I bought 11-12 years ago. They have been altered over the years to make them satisfactory to me. I plan to duplicate the resulting holsters when I finish moving into the new workshop. I have had a number of rigs made from my design and have never been fully satisfied. Keep in mind I have a need for speed. I very much appreciate the rigs of the past but they do not work in SASS if you are super competitive.

Red Cent, thank you for the information and the pictures.

Red, maybe in a separate subject, I would love to hear you ideas on CAS rigs.  Taking them to the limit without destroying the vibe of the sport.

Thats like throwing a rabbit in a brier patch. Oh no!

Hunt the new post.
