Can anyone here ID this maker mark?

+1.
But there isn't a heck of a lot online about Haney.

Camano Ridge

No picture of makers mark yet, however found this little tid bit.

In 1886, Mr. Dutton founded J. H. Haney & Company, a wholesale harness and saddlery concern. This business prospered and expanded throughout the years of its existence, and the firm was one of the pioneers in the automobile business. At the time of the death of one of the original partners the partnership was dissolved, and the firm was incorporated to continue to operate the business under the name W. M. Dutton & Sons Company. This firm was one of the first to enter the radio and electrical appliances field. As new lines developed, the enterprising nature of Mr. Dutton was such that his firm was usually one of the first in the field. Mr. Dutton retired from the business in 1928, and since that time the business has continued its record of development and expansion.

And that company now, Dutton-Lainson, supplies me with electric meter sockets here at my "for money" job.

I have found a lot of info regarding the business itself, and even a link that shows that there are lots of photos of the harness shop, (but no visible photos), but no actual items anywhere that I can find.

I suppose its safe enough to restore this one without destroying a valuable piece...

Can't add much to the conversation other than the top line looks to end with "LY & CO.", and the "MAKER" line may be "MAKERS".

Thanks Will. It is definately a plural Makers in there.
I did a little light cleaning last night, and will try to get it in the light today to see what it says now. I am about 95% sure it says "J H Haney & Co Omaha" though. Once in awhile it looks like a G trying to sneak in the top portion though.

St. George

Actually, Dutton 'helped' found the J.H. Haney & Company saddlery.

J.H. Haney, William A. McKey and W.M. Dutton were partners, but Dutton got third billing as the junior.

Haney was a jobber, and manufactured wholesale saddlery and harness at 1315 Howard Street, Omaha, Nebraska, and horse collars in Hastings - and they produced good-looking, hard-wearing saddles and leather goods that saw a wide distribution.

Sears, Roebuck & Co. was a major buyer, and Haney produced the 'Rose Pattern' saddle for them.

For the time - late 1880's - 1900 - they were a big-time concern, with a two-story building and 200 employees.

Today, even the Haney family doesn't know anything about their forebears, since they destroyed all of their records around WWII, and went into the shoe repair business.

I actually use one of their fobs, and I found it in a shop in Texas - a classic "Haney" saddle, with carved roses visible all over...

The Fonda Brothers of Omaha, Nebraska made the fob and it's so marked. (Yeah - it's "that" Fonda family - they were manufacturers of stamps and dies.).

St. George, thanks for that info.
Can you post a pic of your fob? It would be interesting to see.

Alas, no - I'm somewhat of a Luddite, and gave up taking pictures a long time ago.

The nice thing about this fob - outside of the Omaha connections - is that unlike pretty much every other fob out there - they never faked one.

Haney Shoes

Hi -
I am a member of the Haney family and was so thrilled to find this picture of the saddle on this forum.  We have actually never seen one of the Haney saddles.

The Haney family is still in the leather business.  The shoe repair shop referred to by St. George was started by Paul Haney, grandson of J.H. Haney, in the 1940s.  It is still a successful and well known business today, run by Paul Haney's grandchildren.  My husband is one of his grandchildren.

J.H. Haney and his partners had an opportunity to go into business with Henry Ford, even meeting with him.  But Haney did not believe in automobiles or that they would ever be a profitable business.  I suspect this is the time that he and Dutton parted ways.  We have often joked in our family how rich we might have been if he had struck that deal with Henry Ford.   :)

I am curious about the destruction of records during WWII that was mentioned.  How do you know that?  Do you know the Haney family?

Welcome to the forum, HS. Glad you were able to find this thread and see the saddle. Glad to hear the Haney name is still in leather.

Nice to have you with Haney, and that your family is being recognized for it's contributions...
