I have tried to find when reading all the posts concerning the conversion kits offered by Kirst and McDowell for the gated cylinder kits.....no where do they show, talk about or insinuate that a new pawl or hand with cuts for two steps are included in the kit........if they are not, (the kit photos show the ratchet teeth cut so they are centered between the chambers unlike the C&B cylinders), how the heck do the kits work?

They use the original hand.  The geometry is such that the original hand is JUST wide enough to continue to rotate the cylinder far enough for it to lock.  The ratchet teeth on a modern factory built conversion and on the SASS are not nearly as wide as on a C&B cylinder and they use a two tooth hand to ensure proper lock up and reliability.  In all candor the Kirst products are FIRST rate in quality and materials.  However, on occasion with any amount of hand wear they cease to function and you have to replace the hand.
