Question on Schuetzen Powder

My local BP supplier dried up a while back and I just finished my last can of Goex. A local shop has started carrying Schuetzen powder.I don't know anything about them. Anyone with experience. If it's any good, it's cheaper to drive there and buy than to pay a hazmat and buy in bulk over the internet.

Thanks

If you used Goex 2f, and make the switch to Schuetzen 2f, you'll want to drop the charge abit, as the Schuetzen is about the same actual kernel size as Goex 3f. In one of the 45-70's I ended up having to use 65 grs of Schuetzen to duplicate what 70 grs of goex was doing.
You can always get 5 lb orders from Powder Inc, and Grafs if you want less than a full case of powder.
Hazmat is 27.50, that'll buy you what 8 gallons of gas? But as long as you have a local stocking dealer it is a good thing to support them.

I've been using it in my shotgun loads for awhile.  I've had good luck with it.  Makes plenty of smoke and fire.  I'll be shifting over to it for all my firearms as I couldn't find any more Diamondback and it is cheaper than Goex.  Ranch 13 I'll keep in mind to watch how the 45LC responds to Schuetzen.

You'll notice a huge difference between the Schuetzen and the Diamondback.

I have been using Schuetzen almost exclusively for all my CAS cartridges and shotgun for several years now. Schuetzen is a better powder than Goex. It burns cleaner and leaves less residue behind. Schuetzen is made by Wano in Germany. They use the same high grade charcoal that Swiss uses, but Schuetzen is much cheaper than Swiss.

Personally I think Schuetzen is the best thing going for CAS. It costs approximately the same as Goex, yet it leaves less residue behind. I use the exact same charges of Schuetzen in my cartridges as I do with Goex. I have never put them over a chronograph, there is no need for that for CAS cartridges. When I say I use the same charge, I am talking about by volume, for instance I use 2.2CC of FFg in 45 Colt, no matter what the brand of powder is.

By the way, the house brand of powder that Graff sells is really Schuetzen in their own bottle.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Sorry, that chart tells you next to nothing. To use Schuetzen, or any other Black Powder in 'pistol' cartridges, put in enough powder so that when the bullet is seated the powder will be compressed by about 1/16" - 1/8". For 45 Colt and 44-40 that works out to 2.2CC of FFg for me, no matter what powder I use. If you want to know how much it weighs, pour it out and weigh it.

I'm with Driftwood on this.  Schutzen is cleaner than Goex and burns the same.  Load it just like you would Goex.  No problemo.

Driftwood, the wood that Wano uses to make Schuetzen is plain Alder.  Not a bad wood for BP charcoal but not the same as Alder Buckthorn that Swiss and KIK uses for their charcoal.

Wano subcontracts the purchase of their charcoal.  Swiss buys the branches and ricks them for 3 years in batches then makes the charcoal in house.  As for KIK, don't know if they subcontract or rick in house and make their own charcoal

+1.  Schuetzen has been my favorite for a couple years now.

Listen to Driftwood.  He's got some good advice.  I've used GRAF's 2F BP, which is the same as Schuetzen, for several years.  I have now switched to Diamondback 2F BP.  I have not noticed any difference at all except in the price.  It's cheaper.  It all goes BOOM and clean up is the same.

It doesn't impact shooting Schuetzen for CAS ... but in 2009 Wano changed the processing of Schuetzen that yields an 8 - 10% increase in velocity.  Shooting a 1000yds with Schuetzen though, the extra humph means a lot

Schuetzen is now my "go to" powder.  For scatterguns I use their Harzer powder.  For SASS KDs it does just fine, and it costs a pfennig or so less per roar.

I drove down and bought some 2F and 3F. Since I've been reloading my own .45 colt, I've been using full load (35 grn) for farm use.

I'm not sure of myself yet to reload smokeless, and I love BP. I keep some leverevolution and magtech for smokeless, but are to hard or expensive to buy now. I lucked out and they had a shipment of CCI 300 LPP just coming in so I bought a thousand. But at $44.00 I hated to.

The powder was $13.00 a pound, which was the same as Pyrodex..

I think I'll go next payday and get more. Thanks for all the advice.

I tried out some Shuetzen 2ffg I bought out at the Brady shoot today for the first time in my .50 Hawken. I was very pleased with it. It did not seem to me to be as dirty as Goex, not sure how subjective that is, but it seemed to clean up easier and leave less residue.
