Well, gents, given enough time, I will change my mind, and that's exactly what happened here.  While waiting for my Model P, I spent some time discussing things with Bryan Buck (Oklahoma Tom) from 3B Shooting Supply.  He was very helpful in an extensive email discussion.  Based on what he told me, I decided to go with a Cimarron (Pietta) Frontier with the same configuration (old model, 44-40, 4 ¾" barrel).

I picked up the gun last night from my local dealer and it looks good.  There are some burrs that need smoothing, but overall it looks and feels very good.  I might mention that it has the two-line patent date on the frame.  I haven't shot it yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so.  The gun sure looks good in my Old West Reproductions (Rick Bachman, AKA Buck Stinson) double-loop holster with money belt.

Thanks again for the advice and comments.

73 was not even offered to civilians from the begining ..only the Army got the 7 1/2"

if in the first year or two a civilian had one,  it was either sold by a trooper for wiskey money or stolen and sold

Not true. The first 50 to 100 were mostly in .44 Russian & American and were sold to the public before the Military adopted it. Johnny Ringo had #222.  ;)

I love all of these discussions about SAA clones. I own two, a 2010 made Uberti El Patron, 4.75" barrel in .357 magnum, and a 1995 made Uberti built for Navy Arms, 7.5" barrel, .45 Colt in the old model frame. I love these guns, so much so, that I sit around the house with both just to look at. I've put around 750 rounds through the El Patron without a hicup. I'd love a new Colt, but I can't imagine what I'd get for triple the price, other than the name (which is worth something for certain). Anyway, I just wanted to add my experience with these for anyone else thinking about buying a clone.
