Hi y'all.  I'm looking for a way to make faux Ivory, and was wonderin' if anyone here could help.  anything helps.

PS. If yer' wandering what this has to do with firearms, it is to make faux ivory grips for revolvers.

Only problem with that is finding a tall enough faux.

Just wood, i think.  Holly is a very dense hardwood that is white to pale yellow.  It makes quite nice revolver grips.

I believe Celluloid Plastic, suitably colored, was touted as a substitute for true Ivory early in the 20th century.
I believe there are are modern Polymers that could be termed suitable as Ivory substitutes, or 'Faux'.
Also Walrus tusk or similar animal 'tooth' might be used, and be obtainable on a continuing basis.

As to hardwoods or specialty dense or patterned woods, be careful what adn where you buy it o ryou may run afoul fo the Federal Government like Gibson Guitars did in recent history.

I've made grips for some of my pistols out of  scrap pieces of Corian counter top material. It's relatively easy to work with and impervious to most gun cleaning materials.

Where did you find the scrap Corian? I haven't been able to locate any locally.

Sir Charles,
I get free scrap pieces from a local counter top shop. A typical piece is approximately 4" to 6" x 18" to 24" x 1/2" thick which is just fine for pistol grips. Maybe a cabinet shop can steer you to someone. You can also buy sample pieces from Corian.

Try the link below:

Vanilla Corian is the color I thinks looks the most like Ivory.

You also might try Googleing "Corian scrap pieces for sale"

Johnny;  I'll try again but it didn't get me anywhere a couple of years ago.
