Spencer...What is it worth???
« on: February 14, 2013, 12:52:53 PM »
I have the chance to buy an origional Spencer Carbine.

It is in excellent mechanical condition. Everything works as it should.

Impossible to read the markings on the top of the action as they are quite worn, or someone took steel wool to it. A light pitting and a few bumps and bangs here and there.

Appears to be a 50cal. Rimfire.

The bore is a 5 on a scale of 1-10. Rifling exists but it is quite rough.

The wood is in excellent shape although the forearm doesn't match the stock in grain structure. No splits or cracks.

What can you tell me from this picture.........

I can buy it for $2000...............Deal / No Deal ???

I'm not sure about the price, but the way guns of all kinds are going up, it could be about right. (Like I see on those card reader things in various stores..."Is this price okay?" My answer, "It is correct, but it sure isn't okay!"  :P )

What are the markings stamped on the top of the receiver, and also on the barrel?  Does it have a sling ring/bar assembly on the left side of the stock? From the presence of the Stabler cutoff, I'd say you are correct that it is a .56-.50 Spencer rim fire.
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

Serial #?  Do the serial #s match?  It has a Stabler cutoff?  Rough bore? Different wood? Like to see more photos especially of the top of the receiver.  Send them to me at fsgrand2@fairpoint.net and I will enlarge them up for you.

I'd shop around just based upon what you said about the bore.  Others will respond I'm sure.

It has the saddle ring and slide on the other side.

I can not read the markings on the receiver. And I can't find any markings on the barrel.

I'm going to go back in a few minutes with a magnifying glass to see if I can see anything else. I'm going to take more pictures.

Stay tuned.

THANKS for all the help!

I decided not to purchase this rifle.

I'm going to apply the funds to a custom CPA rifle.

It is available at Rons Sport Shop in South Dartmouth, MA

Serial # 56479

EGW cartouch on the stock

You can make out the word "Boston" on the top of the receiver.

No cracks in the stock or forarm

Has the magazine disconnect.

All parts work flawlessly including the extractor

Has saddle ring and bar slide

Rifling looks good. Slight pitting in the bore.....6.5 out of 10

He's asking $2000 and seems firm.

Whith the 56479 serial No and the Stabler cutt -off it would be a Springfield converted 1860 56-56 to 56-50 carbine, the scrubing of the adress is normal as they were re-finished by Springfield, these converted carbines tend to bring a slight premium but with a rough bore $2000 is on the top end,I think it will stay were it is for a time

I'm glad I didn't buy it. I've looked at a bunch of Spencers, and this 1 looked like the best of all of them. But you folks are the expert so thanks for your help
