I want to shippt my Spencer more. The barrel needs to be relined. I know of Hoyt. Who else does this? Are any better than others?

I've had Hoyt reline a .69 calibre musketoon, an M.1855 pistol-carbine, a Mississippi rifle, an M.1863 U.S. rifle-musket, and, most recently, an M.1860 .56-56 Spencer carbine. All are originals, all done with superb craftsmanship. He adjusted the rifling pitch, based on what best works for N-SSA shooters. His prices are, to me, extraordinarily reasonable. Turnaround time varies. Only caveat: on the Spencer, I'm convinced he chambered it for .56-50. A friend opened the chamber a tad, and all is well. If you want to telephone him, try calling 6:30 or 7:00 AM EST. Dan Whitacre of Winchester, Virginia, does a great deal of N-SSA work and, I believe, is well thought of. He has a good web page.

I'm not sure Dan can do a Spencer, but it would be worth a call to find out. He does excellent work. Bobby has done probably a dozen barrels for me, from 45-80 Long Range Trapdoor to M-1816 smoothbore. He's about to do my Merrill Rifle. Obviously, I'd recommend him highly. He will line it however you like, from original to N-SSA to Kerr gain twist if you really want. If you are shooting at 50 yard clay pigeons, a surprisingly rough barrel will put away targets. One day coming off the line and ran into Bobby. He looked down my Spencer and commented that he had lined barrels that looked way better than what I was shooting. I had just run 6 hits in 8 shots, and the misses were my fault.

I'll echo the Bobby Hoyt comments. I should have mentioned that I have a Maynard that shot radically to the left. When I sent it in for reline I asked him to correct this if possible. Plum center/tack driver now.

I called Hoyt today but no luck. I will try again earlier in the day.

Just a side comment to Arizona Trooper -- my Maynard looked perfect on the inside - described as excellent by seller. Couldn't argue with that --- except it key-holed every bullet and every load I tested. Sometimes a barrel is shot out and you can't really see it. Thanks to Bobby it's a wonderful little critter now.

Thumper

Don't know if he does Spencers or not, but I just got back my 73' 32-20 from Redman's and the work is perfect, it's even real hard to see the liner at the end of the bbl.

Bob Hoyt replied to my call and said I could reach him tomorrow.

I just got my spencer back with a newly fitted centerfire block.
