I was going to dab a bit of these grease on my Navy Colt's cylinder pin, then thought, wait, it's a petroleum product. Bad idea? What's your favorite lube for the cylinder pin?

Don't sweat it. I've used nothing but petroleum lubes on the arbor including AMSOIL synthetic grease, Lubriplate, cheap rotgut 1 lb bearing grease, etc. Same things for over ball grease too. Call me a heretic but they all work and are dirt cheap. Probably plain old Vaseline or petroleum jelly form athe Dollar store would work as well. After all, Ballistol is substantially liquid petrolatum (mineral oil). However I do use lube wads I punch out myself and aniont them with 50/50 beeswax & olive oil.

I have been using Mobil 1 Wheel Bearing Grease (fully synthetic, of course) for the past six years.

It works great!!!  Be sure to get a barrier of it at the front of the bushing, so the gap between the cylinder and frame are "sealed" with grease.  Sometimes this lasts a whole match, sometimes not.  But, I've never had a complete stoppage when lubricating the pistols in this way with this product.

There is a solution to continuous trouble free shooting with Remington 58s and Colt open tops.  Silas McFee and I ran an exhaustive torture test several years ago.  We used 45 Cal Big Lube bullets lubed with PL-II.  At the end of the test the guns were still working fine and shooting accurate.  Silas was shooting Rem. 58s.  I've run the same test with my 1860 open tops with similar results.

The Big Lube®LLC bullets haul the ONLY lube needed.  There are Three of them now.  They are the little EPP-36, original EPP-UG 45 and the conical DDPUK-ROA 45 RNFP 210 grain.  Lube/sized to chamber size for an interference fit with a good quality bp lube they all shoot a hundred or more rounds with no need to clean to maintain function or accuracy.

What is happening is that all that lube held captive in the huge Big Lube grove splashes anywhere fouling goes and keeps that fouling soft so that the previous shot's fouling is blown away by the following shot.  Your second and your last shot of the day both encounter the same amount of very soft fouling.  Clean up is a snap.

If you are stuck on round balls, there are now Six cavity Professional round ball molds available from Big Lube.  Same platform as all the other Big Lube Six cavity Professional molds.  Same high production speed.  No, they don't have lube groves.  They are round balls.

Listed on the http://www.biglube.com web site in the "extras" menu is the Big Lube®LLC bullet sampler.  It holds 25 bullets and the customer can populate it with up to five different Big Lube®LLC bullets of 5ea.

The sampler runs $15 and ships with a coupon for $15 off of a mold purchase from Big Lube.

Happy New Year!
